Ijaz al-Bayan an Maani al-Quran (The Brevity of Clarification Regarding the Meanings of the Quran) is a concise Quranic commentary by the sixth-century AH scholar Abu al-Qasim Mahmud ibn Abi al-Hasan al-Naysaburi, known as Bayan al-Haqq (d. after 553 AH / 1158 CE) .
Purpose and Composition
Bayan al-Haqq composed the book after authoring several extensive commentaries on the Quran . In his preface, he explained that existing commentaries tended either toward extreme brevity—restricting themselves to a single early opinion and leaving the reader unsatisfied—or toward excessive length and repetition that hindered memorization and study . He designed Ijaz al-Bayan as an intermediate work condensing the core insights of Quranic exegesis into a memorable format, advising readers who sought expansive detail to consult his longer work, Ghurar al-Aqawil fi Maani al-Tanzil . According to biographical records noted by Ismail Pasha al-Baghdadi, Bayan al-Haqq completed the text in 553 AH in Khujand .
Scope and Method
Despite its concise layout, the author stated that the work incorporates more than ten thousand scholarly points of benefit (fawa'id) . These encompass straightforward exegesis (tafsir), deeper interpretation (ta'wil), textual evidence (dalil), Quranic parallels (naza'ir), grammatical analysis (i'rab), occasions of revelation (asbab al-nuzul), legal rulings (ahkam al-fiqh), rare Arabic lexical usages (nawadir al-lughat), and uncommon hadiths (ghara'ib al-ahadith) .
Reception and Editions
The biographer Yaqut al-Hamawi recorded Ijaz al-Bayan among Bayan al-Haqq's notable compositions, observing that the author claimed exceptional literary mastery in his writings . The text has been edited in modern times by Hanif ibn Hasan al-Qasimi and published by Dar al-Gharb al-Islami in Beirut .
