Ifrad Ahadith Asma Allah wa Sifatihi – Ghayr Sifat al-Af'al – fi al-Kutub al-Sittah (Isolating the Hadiths on the Names and Attributes of God—Excluding the Attributes of Actions—in the Six Books) is a contemporary hadith and creed study by the Saudi scholar Hissa bint Abd al-Aziz al-Saghir .
Background and Academic Defense
The work was originally prepared as a doctoral dissertation in Islamic Studies with a specialization in Hadith and its sciences at the Girls' College of Education in Mecca, under the General Presidency for Girls' Education in Saudi Arabia . It was supervised by Prof. Dr. Ali Abd al-Fattah Ali, an associate professor at the Girls' College of Education in Jeddah, and defended on 23 Dhu al-Hijjah 1417 AH (1996 CE) . The examination committee included Prof. Dr. Muhammad Ahmad al-Sanhuri from the Girls' College of Education in Mecca as internal examiner and Prof. Dr. Uwayd ibn Iyad al-Mutrafi from Umm al-Qura University as external examiner . It was subsequently published under the title Sharh Asma Allah Ta'ala al-Husna wa Sifatihi al-Waridah fi al-Kutub al-Sittah by Dar al-Qasim in Riyadh (first edition, 1420 AH) .
Objectives and Scope
The study aims to gather marfu hadiths concerning the names and attributes of God that are scattered throughout the Six Books of Hadith (al-Kutub al-Sittah), with the exception of the attributes of divine actions (sifat al-af'al) . The author's stated method involves:
- Arranging the compiled traditions alphabetically by the relevant divine name or attribute, while organizing the texts under each entry according to hadith principles .
- Defining the meanings of these names and attributes, noting the frequency and examples of their occurrences in the Quran, and identifying those not mentioned in the Quranic text .
- Sourcing the narrations (takhrij), evaluating chains of transmission (isnad) by examining the biographies of narrators when necessary, and issuing rulings on their authenticity .
- Analyzing the hadith texts (matn) by explaining difficult vocabulary (gharib), extracting scholarly benefits, and addressing their theological dimensions strictly in accordance with the methodology of the early righteous forebears (al-salaf al-salih), away from figurative interpretations (ta'wil) .
Structure and Contents
The book is organized into an introduction, a preamble, and two main parts:
- Preamble (Tamhid): Reviews scholarly efforts and historical engagement with the compilation and study of texts on the divine names and attributes .
- Part One (al-Bab al-Awwal): Hadiths concerning the names of God Almighty in the Six Books, divided into four chapters .
- Part Two (al-Bab al-Thani): Hadiths concerning the attributes of God Almighty in the Six Books, divided into three chapters .
