Idamat al-Nazar fi Tahrir Nukhbat al-Fikr (إدامة النظر في تحرير نخبة الفكر, Perpetuating the Gaze in Refining the Choicest of Thoughts) is a contemporary commentary by the Saudi scholar Abd al-Aziz al-Rayyis on the hadith terminology primer Nukhbat al-Fikr fi Mustalah Ahl al-Athar by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (773–852 AH / 1372–1449 CE) .
Origin and Composition
The book originated as an audio transcription of an intensive educational course delivered by Abd al-Aziz al-Rayyis, supervisor of the al-Islam al-Atiq website, in which he explained Ibn Hajar's primer on hadith terminology . After students transcribed and indexed the lectures, al-Rayyis reviewed the work and titled it Idamat al-Nazar fi Tahrir Nukhbat al-Fikr, releasing it with an introductory note dated 23 Sha'ban 1441 AH (April 2020 CE) .
Methodology and Content
The work addresses hadith nomenclature (mustalah al-hadith) as an auxiliary discipline (ilm al-alah) designed to determine the authenticity or weakness of narrations . In the introduction, the author outlines his commentary method across three main principles:
- Clarifying Ibn Hajar's intended meaning throughout the text .
- Expanding upon crucial points where elaboration is needed .
- Providing critical remarks and observations on Ibn Hajar's formulations where applicable .
The commentary stresses combining the study of hadith with jurisprudence (fiqh) and insists that the terminology of hadith must reflect the linguistic and practical usage of the early hadith authorities rather than later definitions imported from speculative theology (kalam) or formal logic (mantiq) . Al-Rayyis also highlights the contributions of modern hadith scholars, especially Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani, directing students to benefit from his verification works and methodological rules .
