Idafat lil-Nat al-Akmal li-Ashab al-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (lit. 'Additions to the Most Complete Description of the Companions of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal') is a biographical supplement compiled by Muhammad Muti al-Hafiz and Nizar Abaza to complete the Hanbali biographical dictionary al-Nat al-Akmal li-Ashab al-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal by Muhammad Kamal al-Din al-Ghazzi .
Background and Purpose
The primary work, al-Nat al-Akmal, was compiled by Muhammad Kamal al-Din ibn Muhammad al-Ghazzi al-Amiri (d. 1214 AH) as a continuation (dhayl) to Mujir al-Din al-Ulaymi's biographical work al-Manhaj al-Ahmad fi Tarajim Ashab al-Imam Ahmad, recording the biographies of Hanbali scholars who lived between 901 AH and 1207 AH . When editing al-Ghazzi's text, Muhammad Muti al-Hafiz and Nizar Abaza gathered an appendix of additions and rectifications (ziyadat wa-istidrakat) to extend the biographical record of the Hanbali school through the end of the fourteenth century AH .
Scope and Content
The supplement contains biographical notices for Hanbali scholars whose deaths occurred between 1214 AH and 1400 AH . It opens with the entry for Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Shaybani (d. 1214 AH) and covers subsequent scholars from regions such as Damascus, Najd, al-Ahsa, and Nablus, drawing upon various biographical and historical sources .
Publication
The work was published alongside the edited text of al-Ghazzi's al-Nat al-Akmal by Dar al-Fikr in Damascus in its first edition in 1402 AH / 1982 CE . It is also cited in modern scholarly works under the title Mulhaq al-Nat al-Akmal li-Ashab al-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal .
