Hayat al-Sahaba (The Lives of the Companions) is an Arabic biographical and thematic compilation by the Indian scholar and preacher Muhammad Yusuf al-Kandahlawi (1335–1384 AH / 1917–1965 CE) . The work gathers extensive narrations and reports documenting the lives, virtues, missionary efforts (da'wa), and sacrifices of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his Companions .

Method and Structure

Unlike traditional biographical dictionaries that arrange entries alphabetically by the names of individual Companions, Hayat al-Sahaba is structured thematically around religious subjects and virtues . The book opens with the chapter on calling people to God and His Messenger (Bab al-Da'wa ila Allah wa-ila Rasulihi), exploring how the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions prioritized propagating the faith above all else . Subsequent sections cover themes such as the pledge of allegiance, enduring hardships and extreme weather for the sake of da'wa, spending wealth, and devotion .

In assembling the material, al-Kandahlawi drew directly from classical hadith corpora, biographical compendia, and historical chronicles, citing sources such as Musnad Ahmad, the collections of al-Tabarani, al-Mustadrak by al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, Hilyat al-Awliya' by Abu Nu'aym al-Isbahani, al-Isaba by Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani, and the Tabaqat of Ibn Sa'd .

Reception and Critique

In his introductory preface to the book, Abu al-Hasan 'Ali al-Hasani al-Nadwi praised the compilation, stating that the biographies of the Prophet ﷺ and his Companions constitute among the greatest sources of faith and religious feeling for the Muslim community . The work achieved widespread circulation and became widely utilized for moral and spiritual education, particularly within the Tablighi Jama'at movement .

Scholars of hadith assessed the work's critical rigor. Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani remarked that the book gathered reports without distinguishing authentic narrations from unverified or unsound material regarding the Prophet ﷺ and the Companions . Similarly, Muhammad Jamil Zayno described the book as beneficial but noted that it includes weak and fabricated narrations and requires critical verification and sourcing (takhrij) .

Editions and Translations

Marginal glosses and annotations (hawashi wa-ta'liqat) were composed for the book by In'am al-Hasan al-Kandahlawi (d. 1416 AH) .

Several translations were prepared in Urdu, including versions by Sadr al-Din 'Amir al-Ansari al-Mazahiri, Muhammad Izhar al-Hasan, and Muhammad Ihsan al-Haqq, the latter undertaken at the center in Raiwind, Pakistan, with an introductory essay by Abu al-Hasan 'Ali al-Nadwi dated 1412 AH (1991 CE) .
