Hashiyata Qalyubi wa Umayra is a composite work of Shafi'i jurisprudence comprising two separate supercommentaries on Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli's (d. 864 AH) commentary, Kanz al-raghibin ("Treasure of the Eager"), on al-Nawawi's (d. 676 AH) legal manual Minhaj al-talibin ("The Path of the Seekers") .
Authors and Context
The base work commented upon is Kanz al-raghibin, al-Mahalli's exposition of al-Nawawi's Minhaj al-talibin, which is itself an abridgment of al-Rafi'i's (d. 623 AH) al-Muharrar in Shafi'i positive law (furu') .
The two supercommentaries published together under this title were composed by two prominent Egyptian Shafi'i jurists:
- Hashiyat al-Burlusi: authored by Shihab al-Din Ahmad al-Burlusi, known as 'Umayrah (d. 957 AH / 1550 CE), an Egyptian Shafi'i jurist who studied under scholars such as al-Burhan Ibrahim ibn Abi al-Sharif (d. 923 AH) and Ahmad al-Sinbati (d. 995 AH) .
- Hashiyat al-Qalyubi: authored by Shihab al-Din Ahmad ibn Ahmad ibn Salama al-Qalyubi (d. 1069 AH / 1659 CE; another report gives 1070 AH), an Egyptian Shafi'i scholar from Qalyub who wrote numerous commentaries and treatises .
Structure and Layout
In standard printed compilations, the text is arranged across four volumes . Each page displays al-Mahalli's commentary on Minhaj al-talibin at the top, followed by al-Qalyubi's gloss, and concluding with 'Umayrah's gloss, with dividers separating the distinct works .
Reception and Editions
The supercommentaries became standard reference texts for later Shafi'i jurists and were regularly cited in subsequent legal scholarship, including Sulayman al-Jamal's supercommentary on Sharh al-manhaj .
Notable printings of the combined work in four volumes include:
- An early edition printed at al-Matba'a al-Maymaniyya in Cairo in 1306 AH .
- The third edition produced by Mustafa al-Babi al-Halabi wa-Awladuhu in Egypt in 1375 AH .
- An edition published by Dar al-Fikr in Beirut in 1415 AH / 1995 CE .
- An edition published by Dar al-Kutub al-'Ilmiyya in Beirut in 1417 AH / 1997 CE, prepared by 'Abd al-Latif 'Abd al-Rahman .
