Hashiyat Thalathat al-Usul (The Marginal Gloss on the Three Fundamental Principles) is an explanatory theological commentary written by the Hanbali scholar Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Qasim (d. 1392 AH / 1972 CE) on the creedal treatise Thalathat al-Usul by Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (d. 1206 AH) .
Purpose and Content
Ibn Qasim noted in his introduction that he composed the gloss to explain the meanings of Thalathat al-Usul because students diligently memorized the base text due to its great benefit, while seeking clarity on its succinct expressions . The underlying treatise covers the core tenets of Islamic monotheism—specifically the oneness of divine lordship (tawhid al-rububiyyah) and worship (tawhid al-uluhiyyah), loyalty and disavowal (al-wala' wa-l-bara'), and the three fundamental principles that every Muslim is required to know: knowledge of God, knowledge of the religion of Islam through its scriptural proofs, and knowledge of the Prophet Muhammad . In his gloss, Ibn Qasim provides line-by-line clarifications of these concepts, defines theological terminology, and elaborates on the textual evidences cited by the author .
Reception and Publication
The work is considered one of the prominent printed commentaries on the treatise . Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-Madani remarked that Ibn Qasim demonstrated the precision of a foundational theorist (usuli) in his gloss on Thalathat al-Usul . The scholar Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jibreen described it as a valuable marginal commentary that clarifies the author's aims and the implications of the textual proofs .
The work was printed three times during the author's lifetime . Its first edition was published in Damascus by Matba'at al-Taraqqi in 1375 AH . Subsequent printings included a second edition in Damascus in 1380 AH and a fifth edition in Riyadh in 1395 AH (1975 CE), spanning 96 pages . It was also later revised and corrected for print by Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Jibreen .
