Hashiyat al-Tahtawi ala Maraqi al-Falah Sharh Nur al-Idah is an Islamic legal supercommentary (ḥāshiya) in Hanafi jurisprudence authored by the Egyptian Hanafi mufti Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Tahtawi (d. 1231 AH / 1816 CE) . It provides glosses and explanatory annotations on Maraqi al-Falah, which is Hasan ibn Ammar al-Shurunbulali's (d. 1069 AH) commentary on his own foundational legal primer, Nur al-Idah .

Composition and Sources

Al-Tahtawi authored the work as a set of concise glosses intended to clarify issues and unravel ambiguities in al-Shurunbulali's commentary . In the introduction to the text, al-Tahtawi notes that he drew material from several primary references:

  • The writings and notes left by Abd al-Rahman Afandi Khalwat .
  • Al-Shurunbulali's extensive commentary on Nur al-Idah, titled Imdad al-Fattah .
  • The commentary composed by Muhammad Abu al-Su'ud, alongside additional legal points and insights gathered from other authoritative references .

Content and Scope

Following the organizational scheme of Maraqi al-Falah, the work addresses Hanafi jurisprudence governing acts of ritual worship (ʿibādāt) . The discussion begins with the introductory aspects of composition (the basmala, the hamdala, and the praise of the Prophet ﷺ) before progressing systematically through chapters on purification (al-ṭahāra), prayer (al-ṣalāt), fasting (al-ṣawm), zakah, and the pilgrimage (al-ḥajj) .

Manuscripts and Publication

Manuscript copies of the supercommentary are held in various international collections, including the Khedivial and al-Azhar libraries in Cairo, the Yahya Efendi collection in Istanbul, the Zaytuna Mosque's al-Abdaliyya Library in Tunis, the Asafiyya Library in Hyderabad, and the Qatar National Library .

The text was printed multiple times in early typography, frequently printed alongside or in the margins of Maraqi al-Falah . Early editions appeared in Bulaq in 1269 AH, 1279 AH, 1290 AH, and 1318 AH, as well as in Istanbul at Matba'at Abd al-Raziq in 1304 AH and again in 1327 AH . A modern edited version was prepared by Muhammad Abd al-Aziz al-Khalidi and published in Beirut in 1418 AH / 1997 CE .
