Hashiyat al-Sindi ala Sunan al-Tirmidhi (The Marginal Gloss of al-Sindi on Sunan al-Tirmidhi) is a commentary by the Hanafi hadith scholar Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Abd al-Hadi al-Sindi (d. 1138 AH / 1726 CE; another report gives 1139 AH) on the hadith collection of Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi .
Composition and Scope
Al-Sindi composed marginal commentaries across the Six Books (al-Kutub al-Sittah), though biographical sources note that his gloss on al-Tirmidhi's collection was left incomplete . The work focuses primarily on concise glosses designed to elucidate difficult phrases, explain intended meanings, and clarify both textual and isnad-related issues without unnecessary elaboration unless warranted .
Method and Features
The commentary follows a systematic methodology that encompasses linguistic, critical, and jurisprudential analysis :
- Linguistic and Textual Clarification: Al-Sindi provides grammatical parsing (i‘rab) to establish correct meanings, vocalizes and defines obscure vocabulary (gharib), and notes textual variants across manuscript copies of al-Tirmidhi's text .
- Hadith Criticism and Isnad Analysis: He clarifies essential points within chains of transmission and texts, states hadith grades regarding authenticity and weakness, addresses variations in chains, and points out errors even when made by prominent scholars .
- Reconciliation and Legal Derivation: He harmonizes seemingly conflicting narrations, weighs between them (tarjih) when reconciliation is not feasible, and answers apparent objections regarding legal rulings derived from sound narrations .
- Jurisprudential Discussion: He outlines differences among legal schools (ikhtilaf al-fuqaha), indicates preferred legal positions when opinions diverge, clarifies ambiguous matters prone to error, and highlights legal benefits deduced from hadiths .
Publication
The gloss has been published in Egypt in the margins of al-Tirmidhi's Jami‘ .
