Hashiyat al-Sindi ala Sunan al-Nasai is a concise hadith gloss (taʿlīq) on the Sunan of al-Nasai (al-Mujtaba) written by the Hanafi scholar Abu al-Hasan Muhammad ibn Abd al-Hadi al-Sindi (d. 1138 AH / 1726 CE) .

Purpose and Scope

In his introduction, al-Sindi describes the work as a concise gloss intended to address what readers and instructors require regarding the vocalization of text (ḍabṭ al-lafẓ), the explanation of obscure vocabulary (īḍāḥ al-gharīb), and grammatical parsing (iʿrāb) . He also touches upon al-Nasai's transmission criteria, noting that al-Nasai reported from narrators who were not unanimously rejected as long as the chain of transmission was continuous without breaks or omissions (irsal), and quotes al-Nasai's remark on avoiding certain narrators about whom he harbored doubts, such as Ibn Lahi'ah .

Method and Content

The commentary is structured phrase-by-phrase (bi-al-qawl) . A distinct feature of the work is its explanation of al-Nasai's chapter headings (tarājim) and the clarification of his underlying objectives, frequently praising al-Nasai's precision in legal deduction (istinbāṭ) and chapter titling .

Al-Sindi omits biographical entries for individual narrators, while addressing legal rulings derived from the hadiths (fiqh al-ḥadīth) with moderate elaboration . He does not aim to exhaust all differing scholarly opinions or their detailed proofs, and he generally prefers the rulings of the Hanafi school in accordance with his own legal affiliation .

Relationship to Other Works and Publication

Al-Sindi's gloss is regarded as complementary to Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti's earlier gloss on the work, Zahr al-Ruba ala al-Mujtaba, though al-Sindi's treatment is broader and more expansive in its analysis . Because of this complementary nature, both glosses have repeatedly been printed together in editions of Sunan al-Nasai .
