Ḥāshiyat al-Shihāb ‘alā Tafsīr al-Bayḍāwī, formally titled ‘Ināyat al-Qāḍī wa-Kifāyat al-Rāḍī (The Care of the Judge and the Sufficiency of the Satisfied), is an eight-volume Arabic supercommentary on Quranic exegesis by the Egyptian Hanafi chief judge and philologist al-Shihab al-Khafaji (d. 1069 AH / 1659 CE) . It serves as an extensive gloss on Anwar al-Tanzil wa-Asrar al-Ta'wil, the renowned commentary composed by al-Baydawi (d. 685 AH / 1286 CE or 691 AH / 1292 CE; given as ca. 719 AH by al-Khafaji) .
Background and Purpose
Al-Baydawi's Tafsir enjoyed widespread scholarly prominence and spawned numerous marginal commentaries . In the introduction to his supercommentary, al-Khafaji noted that he set out to organize the work in refined phrasing to serve his era, aiming for clarity of expression and meticulous scholarly verification .
Contents and Methodology
The work systematically tracks the entire text of al-Baydawi's commentary across the Quran . Al-Khafaji provides detailed explanations of difficult phrasing, grammatical analyses (i‘rāb), and rhetorical subtleties (balāgha) . In addition to linguistic and philological investigations, he examines questions of legal theory, theology (kalām), and jurisprudence raised in the base text . He also engages critically with the views of earlier commentators and grammarians, examining their arguments and textual citations .
Reception and Print History
‘Ināyat al-Qāḍī is regarded as one of al-Khafaji's major and most enduring scholarly works . Later scholars frequently cited and compared it with other major supercommentaries on al-Baydawi, such as those written by Shaykhzadah and Abd al-Hakim al-Siyalkuti .
The complete eight-volume text was printed in Istanbul in 1854 CE and in Bulaq in 1283 AH, and it has subsequently seen modern reprints, including an edition issued by Dar Sader in Beirut .
