Hashiyat al-Rawd al-Murbi (Supercommentary on the Flourishing Meadow) is an extensive Hanbali legal supercommentary compiled by Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim (1312–1392 AH / 1894–1972 CE; another report gives 1393 AH) . It serves as an extensive gloss on al-Rawd al-Murbi, Mansur al-Bahuti's (d. 1051 AH) commentary on Musa al-Hajjawi's (d. 968 AH) jurisprudential primer Zad al-Mustaqni .
Composition and Purpose
In his introduction, Ibn Qasim noted that students of Islamic jurisprudence demonstrated a strong desire to study Zad al-Mustaqni and its commentary al-Rawd al-Murbi because the two texts concisely encompassed essential legal matters and served both beginners and advanced scholars . Earlier scholars had written glosses and marginal notes on the work, including Abd Allah Aba Butayn, Abd Allah al-Anqari, and Abd al-Wahhab ibn Fayruz . Ibn Qasim composed his supercommentary as an elected synthesis of these earlier marginalia alongside additional reference works .
Sources and Methodology
The work relies on a wide range of primary sources and authoritative legal texts:
- The lectures and verbal dictations (taqrirat) of his teacher, the Grand Mufti Muhammad ibn Ibrahim Al al-Shaykh .
- Classical Hanbali reference manuals, including al-Tanqih, al-Mughni, al-Zarkashi, al-Sharh al-Kabir, al-Mubdi, al-Muttali, al-Muharrar, al-Furu, al-Tashih, al-Insaf, al-Iqna, Muntaha al-Iradat, and their various supercommentaries .
- The treatises and fatwas of Ibn Taymiyyah, his student Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah, and Ibn Rajab .
- Hadith collections and their commentaries, as well as the juristic works of scholars from other legal schools, such as al-Baghawi, al-Nawawi, and Ibn Rushd .
Methodologically, Ibn Qasim cited reports of consensus (ijma) recorded by early and later scholars—such as Ibn Jarir al-Tabari, Ibn Kathir, Ibn Abd al-Barr, Ibn al-Mundhir, and Ibn Hubayrah—while highlighting significant legal disagreements, substantiating rulings with textual evidence (dalil) and legal reasoning (talil), and clarifying the soundest opinion . The historian and jurist Abd Allah al-Bassam remarked that Ibn Qasim adopted an investigative, analytical approach (maslak al-tahqiq) throughout the work .
Structure and Publication
The composite layout of the printed work presents three distinct texts on each page: the base text of Zad al-Mustaqni enclosed within parentheses, embedded within the running commentary of al-Rawd al-Murbi, followed below a dividing line by Ibn Qasim's supercommentary organized through numerical references .
The first edition was published in seven volumes in Riyadh between 1397 and 1400 AH (1977–1980 CE) . It was collated three times against the author's handwritten manuscript, with the text of al-Rawd al-Murbi separately verified against an additional manuscript, under the supervision and proofreading of Abd Allah al-Jibreen in collaboration with the author's son, Sa'd ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Qasim .
