Hashiyat al-Khalwati ala Muntaha al-Iradat is a legal supercommentary on Ibn al-Najjar al-Futuhi's (d. 972 AH / 1564 CE) authoritative late Hanbali legal manual Muntaha al-Iradat, authored by the Egyptian jurist al-Khalwati (Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ali al-Bahuti, d. 1088 AH / 1677 CE) .

Origin and Compilation

Al-Khalwati, the nephew and close student of the prominent Hanbali jurist Mansur al-Bahuti (d. 1051 AH / 1641 CE), did not compose the work as an independent standalone volume during his lifetime . Instead, it originated as a collection of analytical annotations, glosses, and verifications (tahrirat and taqrirat) inscribed directly in the margins of his personal manuscript copy of Muntaha al-Iradat and on loose sheets preserved within it .

Following al-Khalwati's death in 1088 AH, his students compiled and extracted (tajrid) these scattered notes into an independent book to make them accessible and maximize their scholarly utility . The extracted text comprised approximately forty quires (kurrasas) . The opening preamble written by the compiler explicitly identifies the annotations as the glosses of al-Khalwati on Muntaha al-Iradat fi Jam' al-Muqni' ma'a al-Tanqih wa-Ziyadat .

Method and Content

The supercommentary systematically follows the chapter structure of Muntaha al-Iradat, analyzing complex juridical branches, clarifying concise phrasing in the base text, and providing precise legal qualifications (tahrir) . Throughout the text, al-Khalwati frequently discusses and weighs the interpretations of his teacher Mansur al-Bahuti—often citing him as "our shaykh" and referencing his commentary on Muntaha al-Iradat as well as Kashshaf al-Qina'—while cross-referencing other foundational Hanbali authorities such as al-Iqna', al-Furu', al-Insaf, and al-Tanqih al-Mushbi' . The work also supports legal deductions with numerous hadiths and narrations from the early generations (athar) .

Reception and Editions

The supercommentary is regarded among late Hanbali authorities as one of the most valuable glosses on Muntaha al-Iradat . Leading students from Greater Syria and Palestine traveled to Cairo to study Muntaha al-Iradat and its glosses under al-Khalwati, including Abu al-Mawahib Muhammad ibn Abd al-Baqi al-Ba'li al-Dimashqi (d. 1126 AH), Ismail al-Janini, and Ibrahim al-Janini .

The work was critically edited across two academic dissertations by Sami ibn Muhammad al-Suqayr and Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Luhaydan using four manuscript copies, and published in Doha by the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs of Qatar in partnership with Dar al-Nawadir (1st ed., 1432 AH / 2011 CE) in multiple volumes .
