Hashiyat al-Dasuqi ala Mukhtasar al-Maani is a supercommentary on Arabic rhetoric (ilm al-balaghah) written by the Egyptian scholar Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Dasuqi (d. 1230 AH / 1815 CE) . It glosses Mukhtasar al-Maani, the abridged commentary composed by Sa'd al-Din al-Taftazani (d. 792 AH / 793 AH) on Jalal al-Din al-Qazwini's rhetorical handbook, Talkhis al-Miftah .
Background and Scope
The base text, Talkhis al-Miftah, covers the three standard disciplines of Arabic rhetoric: word order and semantic syntax (ilm al-maani), figures of speech and imagery (ilm al-bayan), and rhetorical embellishment (ilm al-badi) . Al-Taftazani authored two distinct commentaries on it: an extensive commentary entitled al-Mutawwal and a concise commentary titled al-Mukhtasar (often known as Mukhtasar al-Maani) . Al-Dasuqi composed his supercommentary on the latter, completing the text in 1210 AH (1795–1796 CE) .
Method and Sources
In his introduction, al-Dasuqi characterizes his glosses as noble benefits and concise notes (fawa'id sharifa wa-taqyidat latifa) on al-Taftazani's commentary . He explicitly records that he derived the material from the lectures and oral expositions (taqarir) of his verifying teachers at al-Azhar, as well as from the distilled conclusions (zubad) of earlier commentators and glossators .
Transmission and Publication
Manuscript copies of the work are preserved in libraries such as the Ez-Zitouna Mosque collection in Tunis (MS 4398) . It was published in two volumes at the Bulaq press in Cairo in 1271 AH, accompanied by al-Taftazani's commentary in the margins, and saw subsequent printings in Istanbul in 1276 AH, 1290 AH, and 1301 AH .
