Hashiyat al-Bujayrami ala Sharh al-Minhaj, formally titled al-Tajrid li-Naf al-Abid ("The Divestment for the Benefit of Servants"), is a four-volume supercommentary on Shafi'i jurisprudence by the Egyptian scholar Sulayman al-Bujayrimi (1131–1221 AH / 1719–1806 CE).
Background and Composition
The book is an extensive marginal commentary on Sharh al-Minhaj (also known as Fath al-Wahhab bi-Sharh Manhaj al-Tullab), written by Shaykh al-Islam Zakariyya al-Ansari (d. 926 AH / 1520 CE), which was al-Ansari's commentary on his own legal abridgment Manhaj al-Tullab derived from al-Nawawi's Minhaj al-Talibin.
In his introduction, al-Bujayrimi states that he composed the work in response to requests from several colleagues who asked him to assemble the notes and glosses he had recorded on two manuscript copies of Sharh al-Minhaj and two supercommentaries by Ali al-Shabramallisi (d. 1087 AH / 1677 CE). To these he added verified points extracted from various margins and the explanatory positions determined by his teachers during classroom lectures.
Methodology and Conventions
Al-Bujayrimi establishes a specific terminological rule in the preface of the work: whenever he uses the expression "our master" or "our teacher" (shaykhuna) in an unqualified manner, he refers exclusively to his teacher Muhammad al-Ashmawi.
Publication History
The work has been issued in four volumes across numerous printings. Early editions were produced by the Bulaq Press in Cairo across various years, including 1286, 1292, 1307, and 1309 AH. Later editions were published by Dar al-Kutub al-Arabiyya al-Kubra (1330 AH) and Matba'at Mustafa al-Babi al-Halabi in Egypt, as well as Dar al-Fikr in Beirut.
