Hashiyat al-Adawi ala Kifayat al-Talib al-Rabbani is a Maliki legal supercommentary written by the Egyptian jurist Ali ibn Ahmad al-Adawi (d. 1189 AH / 1775 CE) . It serves as an extensive gloss on Kifayat al-Talib al-Rabbani, a commentary composed by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Manufi (d. 939 AH / 1532 CE) on the foundational Maliki legal treatise al-Risala by Ibn Abi Zayd al-Qayrawani (d. 386 AH / 996 CE) .

Background and Composition

In his introduction to the work, al-Adawi explains that the material originated from notes and observations (taqayid) recorded during scholarly discussions and study sessions (mudhakarah) with his colleagues on al-Manufi’s Kifayat al-Talib al-Rabbani . He compiled these glosses into a dedicated supercommentary for his own reference and for fellow students .

Scope and Method

The work functions as a marginal commentary that explicates al-Manufi's expressions, clarifies complex juristic phrasing, resolves textual ambiguities, and substantiates legal rulings within the Maliki school. Historical biographical accounts observe that prior to al-Adawi's scholarly activity, Maliki jurists rarely authored supercommentaries (hawashi) on their school's substantive legal commentaries, and al-Adawi was credited as the first to extensively provide such marginal glosses across several standard Maliki texts . His gloss on al-Manufi's commentary was established as a two-volume work .

Publication History

The supercommentary was printed in Cairo at the Bulaq Press in two volumes in 1288 AH, followed by later printings such as those of the Sharqiyya Press (1300 AH), the Azhariyya Press (1300 AH and 1310 AH), the Khayriyya Press (1305 AH and 1309 AH) , and the Mustafa al-Babi al-Halabi Press in 1357 AH . A later edition was edited by Yusuf al-Shaykh Muhammad al-Biqa'i and published by Dar al-Fikr in Beirut .
