Hamasat al-Qurashi (The Anthology of Bravery of al-Qurashi) is a collection of Arabic poetry compiled by the Iraqi literary scholar Abbas ibn Muhammad al-Qurashi al-Najafi (d. 1299 AH / 1881–1882 CE).

Author and Context

The compiler of the work is identified as Abbas ibn Muhammad ibn Mas'ud al-Qurashi al-Najafi (d. 1299 AH / 1881–1882 CE), while another record names him as Abbas ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Najafi al-Qurashi and gives his death in Aleppo in 1298 AH (1880–1881 CE). The compilation follows the traditional Arabic hamasa genre—exemplified by the seminal anthologies of Abu Tammam and al-Buhturi—which selects and organizes poetic excerpts and fragments into thematic categories.

Content and Structure

The anthology is arranged by thematic chapters, opening with the first chapter dedicated to pride and bravery (al-Fakhr wa-l-Hamasa). Within this section, al-Qurashi brings together selections from a wide spectrum of pre-Islamic, early Islamic, Umayyad, and Abbasid poets, such as al-Walid ibn Yazid, Yazid ibn al-Tathriyya, Amr ibn Baraqa al-Hamdani, Wahb ibn al-Harith, Ibn Mayyada, al-Zubayr ibn Abd al-Muttalib, and Durayd ibn al-Simma. It also features verses by al-Afwah al-Awdi, al-Tirimmah, Hilal ibn Mu'awiya al-Tha'labi, al-Fadl ibn al-Abbas ibn Utba, Ka'b ibn Malik al-Ansari, Zayd al-Khayl al-Ta'i, Umara ibn al-Walid, Dhu al-Isba' al-Adwani, Bashshar ibn Burd, and Di'bil al-Khuza'i.

Publication

The work was edited by Khayr al-Din Mahmud Qablawi and published in Damascus in 1995 (1415–1416 AH) in a single volume by the Ministry of Culture of the Syrian Arab Republic.
