Hadith Sufyan ibn Uyayna Riwayat al-Marwazi (Hadith of Sufyan ibn Uyayna via the Recension of al-Marwazi) is a single-part Hadith monograph (juz') preserving narrations transmitted from the Meccan hadith master Sufyan ibn Uyayna (107–198 AH / 725–814 CE) by his student Abu Yahya Zakariyya ibn Yahya al-Marwazi (d. 270 AH / 883 CE) .
Transmission and Provenance
The compilation represents the transmission of Abu Yahya Zakariyya ibn Yahya ibn Asad al-Marwazi, known by the nickname Zakarwayh, a resident of Baghdad who narrated directly from Sufyan ibn Uyayna . Ibn al-Munadi recorded his death in Rabi' al-Akhir 270 AH, identifying him as the transmitter of the single-volume juz' from Ibn Uyayna . Al-Dhahabi also confirmed that al-Marwazi was the source of Juz' Ibn Uyayna preserved through Abu Tahir al-Silafi . While Abu al-Fath al-Azdi listed al-Marwazi among weak narrators on the pretext that he merely claimed hearing from Ibn Uyayna, later authorities including al-Dhahabi, al-Daraqutni—who deemed him upright (la ba'sa bihi)—and Ibn Hibban confirmed his status as a trustworthy narrator .
The text's transmission chain descended from Zakariyya al-Marwazi through Abu al-Abbas al-Asamm, then Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Hirashi al-Hiri, Abu al-Hasan Makki ibn Mansur al-Karji, Abu Tahir al-Silafi, Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman al-Tarabulsi, Abu al-Hasan Ali al-Wani, and Abu Muhammad Abd al-Wahid al-Suradi, who conveyed it to Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani . Ibn Hajar highlighted the text's exceptional elevation of transmission (nihayat al-'uluw) through continuous audition .
Significance and Editions
The treatise has been valued by hadith specialists for the elevation of its chains, its preservation of rare narrational pathways that corroborate or strengthen specific prophetic reports, and its collection of unique textual variants .
The text has been published in modern editions, including:
- An edition edited by Ahmad ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Suwayyan, published by Maktabat al-Manar in al-Kharj (1407 AH / 1987 CE) .
- An edition titled Riyad al-Janna li-Takhrij Juz' Sufyan ibn Uyayna, edited and analyzed by Mus'ad ibn Abd al-Hamid al-Sa'dani, published by Dar al-Sahaba li-l-Turath in Tanta (1412 AH / 1992 CE) .
