Hadith Sufyan ibn Uyayna Riwayat al-Khula'i (Arabic: حديث سفيان بن عيينة رواية الخلعي, lit. 'The Hadith of Sufyan ibn Uyayna in the Transmission of al-Khula'i') is a short hadith compilation (juz') containing traditions of the Meccan traditionist Sufyan ibn Uyayna (d. 198 AH / 814 CE), selected from the hadith transmissions (fawa'id) of the Egyptian Shafi'i jurist and hadith scholar Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Khula'i (d. 492 AH / 1099 CE).
Transmission and Content
The collection constitutes an extraction (muntakhab) of traditions narrated by Sufyan ibn Uyayna preserved through the scholarly transmission line of al-Khula'i. Al-Khula'i received these narrations from the Egyptian witness-notary Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Umar ibn Muhammad ibn Sa'id al-Bazzaz (known as Ibn al-Nahhas), who transmitted them from Abu Sa'id Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ziyad ibn al-A'rabi in Mecca. Ibn al-A'rabi narrated them on the authority of the Baghdad hadith scholar Abu Uthman Sa'dan ibn Nasr al-Makhrami (d. 265 AH / 878 CE), who heard them directly from Sufyan ibn Uyayna.
The transmission downstream from al-Khula'i was preserved through several prominent scholars:
- Abu Muhammad Abd Allah ibn Rifa'a ibn Ghadir al-Sa'di al-Faradi, who heard the text from al-Khula'i in 556 AH.
- Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Imad ibn al-Husayn al-Harrani, who transmitted it from Ibn Rifa'a.
- Abu al-Husayn Yahya ibn Ahmad ibn Abd al-Aziz al-Judhami (known as Ibn al-Sawwaf), to whom the text was read at the Dar al-Hadith al-Kamiliyya in Cairo on Friday, 17 Shawwal 682 AH.
Manuscript Tradition
A primary manuscript of the text is preserved at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (under Majmu' 117, fols. 98–103). This codex was transcribed in Eastern script (khatt mashriqi) by Musa ibn Muhammad ibn Musa al-Ansari in 682 AH. The manuscript features collation against its source exemplar, textual corrections, and multiple documented audition records (sama'at).
