Hadith Shuba li-Muhammad ibn al-Abbas ibn Najih al-Baghdadi (Hadīth Shuʿba, "The Hadith of Shu'ba") is a specialized hadith compilation compiled by the Baghdadi traditionist Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Abbas ibn Najih al-Bazzaz (263–345 AH / 876–956 CE), focused on narrations transmitted on the authority of the prominent early traditionist Shu'ba ibn al-Hajjaj (d. 160 AH / 776 CE) .
Author and Transmission
The compiler, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Abbas ibn Najih ibn Sa'id ibn Najih al-Baghdadi al-Bazzaz, was born in Rajab 263 AH (876 CE) and lived on the eastern side of Baghdad in the quarter of Murabba'at al-Khursi . He heard hadith from a large circle of scholars, including Yahya ibn Abi Talib, Muhammad ibn al-Faraj al-Azraq, Abu Qilabah al-Raqashi, al-Harith ibn Abi Usama, Isa ibn Abd Allah al-Tayalisi, Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sa'igh, and Abu al-Ayna' .
His narrations were transmitted by several prominent traditionists, among them Ibn Rizqawayh, Abu Ali ibn Shadhan, Abu al-Husayn ibn al-Fadl al-Qattan, al-Hakim al-Naysaburi, and al-Daraqutni . Ibn Rizqawayh characterized him as a memorizer of hadith (hafiz), and Talha ibn Muhammad ibn Ja'far affirmed his reliability (thiqah) . Ibn Najih died in Baghdad on Saturday, with three nights remaining in Jumada al-Akhirah 345 AH (September 956 CE) .
Scope and Subject Matter
The work belongs to the genre of focused hadith monographs (ajza') dedicated to assembling and verifying the transmissions of singular figures in early hadith history . The collection centers on the traditions transmitted through Abu Bistam Shu'ba ibn al-Hajjaj al-Ataki al-Wasiti (d. 160 AH), one of the foremost early authorities of Basra and an early pioneer in the critical examination of transmitters (al-jarh wa-l-ta'dil) in Iraq . Through this compilation, Ibn Najih gathered Shu'ba's narrations via his own network of Baghdadi and Iraqi teachers and chains of transmission .
