Hadith Ibn Mulaib (Hadith of Ibn Mulaib) is a hadith tract (juz') compiled by the Baghdadi traditionist and hafiz Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn Mulaib (191–275 AH / 807–888 CE) .
Transmission and Content
The work consists of hadith narrations transmitted through Ahmad ibn Mulaib’s student Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn 'Amr ibn al-Bakhtari al-Razzaz (251–339 AH) . The author gathered prophetic traditions with their chains of transmission, such as a narration through Jandal ibn Waliq from 'Ubayd Allah from 'Ata' on the authority of Jabir that the Prophet ﷺ said: عمرة في رمضان تعدل حجة ("An 'Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to a Hajj") .
Ahmad ibn Mulaib was known for rigorous precision in his narrations, stating that he only transmitted what he had memorized as thoroughly as his memorization of the Qur'an, and he was noted for distinguishing minute textual details such as the difference between the conjunctions fa and wa in hadith texts . He was declared trustworthy (thiqa) and meticulous (mutqin) by contemporary and later hadith authorities, including Abd Allah ibn Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Musa ibn Harun, Abd al-Rahman ibn Yusuf ibn Khirash, and Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni .
Manuscript Preservation
A historical manuscript copy of the tract survives as part of the Majami' 'Umariyya collection preserved in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus, where it is cataloged in collective volume no. 2 (manuscript item 5, folios 44–54) under the transmission of Abu Ja'far al-Razzaz .
