Hadith al-Taqi ibn al-Majd is a specialized Hadith collection (juzʾ hadithi) containing transmissions narrated by the Shafiʿi jurist and judge Taqi al-Din Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn ʿIsa al-Baʿlabakki, known as Taqi al-Din ibn al-Majd (d. 768 AH / 1367 CE), and compiled for him by the historian and traditionist Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi (d. 748 AH / 1348 CE) .

Background and Compilation

The subject of the collection, Taqi al-Din Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn ʿIsa ibn Mahmud ibn ʿAbd al-Dayf al-Baʿlabakki, held the post of chief judge in several regions, including Tripoli . His father, Shams al-Din ibn al-Majd, introduced him to Hadith scholarship in his youth, having him listen to elevated narrations (ʿawali) from senior traditionists .

Al-Dhahabi extracted and arranged these traditions directly from Taqi al-Din ibn al-Majd’s highest-linked hearings so that he could transmit them to students of Hadith . In classical catalogs, the work is also referred to as al-Muntaqa min Hadith Taqi al-Din ibn al-Shaykh Shams al-Din ibn al-Majd al-Baʿli .

Preservation and Publication

A manuscript copy of the work is preserved at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus under composite collection number 25 . The text was edited by Muhammad Ziyad ʿUmar Takkalah and published by Maktabat al-Ubaykan in Riyadh in 1421 AH (2001 CE) as part of the multi-volume collection Jamharat al-Ajzaʾ al-Hadithiyya .
