Hadith al-Siraj (The Hadiths of al-Sarraj) is a hadith work compiling narrations transmitted on the authority of the Khurasanian hadith master Abu al-Abbas al-Sarraj (216/218–313 AH / 831/833–925 CE) .

Transmission and Structure

The collection represents an extraction (takhrij) compiled by Abu al-Qasim Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahhami al-Naysaburi (446–533 AH) from his teachers who narrated through chains tracing back to Abu al-Abbas al-Sarraj . It was transmitted from al-Shahhami by Abu Muslim al-Mu'ayyad ibn Abd al-Rahim ibn Ahmad ibn al-Ikhwah al-Baghdadi al-Isfahani, who recited and authenticated it with scholars in Isfahan in 606 AH .

The intermediary links between al-Sarraj and al-Shahhami's teachers include scholars such as Abu al-Husayn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Umar al-Khaffaf, Abu Muhammad al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Mukhalladi, Abu Uthman Sa'id ibn Muhammad al-Buhayri, and Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Karim al-Qushayri .

The work is organized into thirty-three parts (ajza') according to al-Shahhami's division . It records traditions received by al-Sarraj from his authorities across Khurasan, Baghdad, Kufa, and the Hijaz, including Hannad ibn al-Sari, Muhammad ibn Sahl ibn Askar, Yahya ibn Musa al-Balkhi, Ya'qub ibn Ibrahim al-Dawraqi, and Abu Hammam al-Sakuni . These narrations are distinct from al-Sarraj's topical work al-Musnad al-Kabir 'ala al-Abwab, which was preserved primarily through al-Khaffaf and organized by jurisprudential chapters .

Publication

The work was edited by Abu Abd Allah Husayn ibn Ukashah ibn Ramadan, accompanied by an introduction and commendation by Ahmad Ma'bad, and published by al-Faruq al-Hadithah in 1425 AH / 2004 CE .
