Hadith al-Salafi an al-Abhariyyin (Traditions of al-Silafi on the Authority of the People of Abhar) is a biographical and hadith compilation by the scholar Abu Tahir al-Silafi (d. 576 AH / 1180 CE), recording narrations, scholarly lineages, and historical accounts from teachers and contemporaries he encountered in the city of Abhar .

Composition and Context

Abu Tahir al-Silafi compiled the material during his travels across the eastern provinces of the Islamic world, following his departure from Baghdad in 500 AH . The text notes readings and transmissions conducted directly in Abhar, including an audition recorded in Dhu al-Hijjah 500 AH . The surviving transmission of the work is related on the authority of Abu 'Amr 'Uthman ibn 'Ali ibn 'Abd al-Wahid al-Qurashi, who received the text via written correspondence (kitaba) sent by al-Silafi from Alexandria .

Structure and Content

The work consists of forty-nine short entries covering prophetic traditions, chains of transmission (isnad), biographical notices, poetic verses, literary excerpts, and personal recollections gathered by al-Silafi from local scholars and visiting companions .

Major subjects and figures documented in the text include:

  • Scholars of Abhar and Maliki Jurists: The work documents the prominence of the Maliki school in Abhar, noting prominent scholarly households such as that of Abu al-Makarim 'Abd al-Warith ibn Muhammad al-Asadi (b. 414 AH), his father Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Mun'im, and the family of Ibn Madkan and Banu al-Nahwi . It records their transmissions of major legal compilations, including the Muwatta' of Malik ibn Anas in the recensions of al-Qa'nabi and Ma'n ibn 'Isa, as well as works by Isma'il al-Qadi and Ibn al-Mawwaz .
  • Biographical Notes and Literary Reports: Entries record anecdotes concerning historical literary figures, such as accounts of Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri and poems exchanged among contemporaries, as well as recollections from preaching assemblies held by local figures like Abu al-Yusr 'Ata' ibn Nabhan al-Asadi .
  • Roster of Shaykhs: Entry thirty-nine contains a dedicated enumeration inserted by the transmitter listing over thirty scholars and shaykhs of Abhar from whom al-Silafi heard transmissions .
  • Neighboring Regions: The concluding sections include notices and anecdotes from neighboring localities such as Zanjan, where al-Silafi stayed at the hospice of Akhi Zanjani and met scholars including Abu al-'Abbas Ahmad ibn Musa al-Nuri al-Ansari .
