Hadith al-Sakan ibn Jami (The Hadith Compilation of al-Sakan ibn Jami) is a short hadith treatise compiled by the Levantine traditionist Abu Muhammad al-Husayn ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Jami' al-Ghassani, commonly known as al-Sakan (d. 437 AH / 1045–1046 CE) .

Author and Compilation

The author, Abu Muhammad al-Husayn (also identified in biographical records as al-Hasan) ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya ibn Jami' al-Ghassani al-Saydawi, belonged to a family of scholars based in Sidon . He was the son of the traditionist Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Jami' (d. 402 AH), the author of Mu'jam al-shuyukh .

Al-Sakan compiled the work as an individual hadith part (juz'), selecting transmissions that he personally transcribed from his direct auditions (sama'at) from his father, his grandfather Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Jami', and other teachers . At the close of the manuscript, al-Sakan recorded: "I selected these hadiths, which I transcribed in my own hand, from all that I heard from my father and my grandfather, may Allah have mercy on them both, and from all my teachers" .

Contents and Transmission

The collection contains eight hadiths with full chains of transmission (isnad):

  • Two narrations received through his grandfather, Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Jami', including a hadith on praying the afternoon prayer ('Asr) before travelling to Quba, and a report on righteous dreams being one of forty-six parts of prophecy .
  • Two narrations received through his father, Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Jami', including the prophetic report الكيس من دان نفسه وعمل لما بعد الموت ("The prudent person is the one who holds himself to account and works for what comes after death"), and a narration regarding visiting the Prophet's grave .
  • Two narrations received from Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn Sulayman ibn Dhakwan al-Ba'labakki in Sidon in the year 354 AH, addressing the revelation of وَلَسَوْفَ يُعْطِيكَ رَبُّكَ فَتَرْضَى and humility in personal conduct .
  • One narration received from Abu Sadiq Muhammad ibn Nasr al-Tabari in Sidon in the year 359 AH regarding the virtue of a believer who mixes with people and endures their harm .
  • One narration received from Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Kufi in Sidon in Safar 359 AH concerning backbiting .

The text was transmitted down through an audition by reading (qira'ah) before Abu al-Hasan 'Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Husayn al-Mawazini in Rajab 502 AH, who had received it via formal transmission license (ijazah) directly from al-Sakan ibn Jami' .

Manuscripts and Publication

The text is preserved in a manuscript in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus . It was edited by 'Umar 'Abd al-Salam Tadmuri and published as an appendix to his edition of Abu al-Husayn ibn Jami's Mu'jam al-shuyukh (together with Muhammad ibn Sanad's al-Muntaqa min al-Mu'jam), issued by Mu'assasat al-Risalah in Beirut and Dar al-Iman in Tripoli (first edition 1405 AH / 1985 CE; second edition 1407 AH / 1987 CE) .
