Hadith al-Badr ibn al-Haytham al-Qadi (Hadith of the Judge al-Badr ibn al-Haytham) is a specialized hadith tract (juzʾ) preserving the narrations transmitted through the Kufan judge Badr ibn al-Haytham (d. 317 AH / 929 CE) .

Author and Transmission

The collector and source of the narrations was Abu al-Qasim Badr ibn al-Haytham ibn Khalaf ibn Khalid ibn Rashid ibn al-Dahhak ibn al-Nu'man ibn Muharriq ibn al-Nu'man ibn al-Mundhir al-Lakhmi, a judge originally from Kufa who took up residence and taught in Baghdad . He was noted for his longevity, reaching the age of 116 according to his student Ibn Shahin, or 117 according to al-Daraqutni . He began writing down hadith late in life, after reaching forty years of age . He died in Shawwal 317 AH—with one report specifying the tenth of Shawwal—and was taken to Kufa for burial, though earlier erroneous death dates of 314 AH and 316 AH were also recorded .

Al-Daraqutni declared him reliable and noble (thiqah nabil), and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi affirmed his status as a trustworthy transmitter . In his transmissions, al-Badr related from senior traditionalists, including Abu Kurayb Muhammad ibn al-'Ala', Harun ibn Ishaq al-Hamdani, Hisham ibn Yunus al-Lu'lu'i, Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj, Muhammad ibn 'Umar ibn al-Walid, 'Amr ibn 'Abd Allah al-Awdi, and Ahmad ibn 'Uthman ibn Hakim al-Awdi . His hadith collection was transmitted directly by scholars such as al-Daraqutni, al-Tabarani, Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn Ahmad ibn Shahin, Abu 'Umar ibn Hayyuwayh, Yusuf al-Qawwas, Abu Bakr al-Abhari, and 'Isa ibn 'Ali .
