Hadith Ahl Hardan (Arabic: حديث أهل حردان, also titled Juz' fihi hadith min hadith Ahl Hardan wa-ahadith 'aliyah quri'at bi-Hardan) is a hadith tractate (juz') compiled by the Damascene Shafi'i scholar Abu al-Qasim Ibn Asakir (499–571 AH / 1105–1176 CE) .

Subject and Content

The work gathers traditions transmitted by narrators associated with Hardan, as well as narrations with elevated chains (ahadith 'aliyah) that were recited there . Hardan is identified in the title heading as a formerly populated village located next to Suqya in the district of Da'iyah . The text opens with an audition transmission recording that the tract was read to Ibn Asakir on Saturday, 2 Rabi' al-Awwal 571 AH .

The opening narrations focus on the transmission of Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Salam ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Hardani, who narrated in the village of Hardan in 289 AH and died in 290 AH . Across its 26 numbered reports, the compilation includes Prophetic traditions on various topics, such as the occasion of revelation of the verse وَإِذَا قُرِئَ الْقُرْآنُ فَاسْتَمِعُوا لَهُ وَأَنْصِتُوا لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ ("And when the Quran is recited, give ear to it and pay heed, that you may obtain mercy") , spending on one's family , sending blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ , and supporting one's brother whether oppressor or oppressed . The text concludes with a statement transmitted from Sufyan ibn Uyaynah regarding the pursuit of hadith .

Transmission and Publication

Manuscript copies of the treatise are preserved in several collections, including the Zahiriyyah Library (Majmu' 34/3771), the Central Library of the Islamic University of Madinah, and the Central Library in Makkah .

The tract was edited by Mish'al ibn Bani al-Jibrin al-Mutayri and published by Dar Ibn Hazm in Beirut (1422 AH / 2001 CE) as the second treatise within a five-part compendium of works by Ibn Asakir, alongside al-Tawbah, Dhamm Dhi al-Wajhayn wa-al-Lisanayn, Fadl Shahr Ramadan, and Fadl Yawm Arafah .
