Hadith Abi Bakr al-Anbari (The Hadith Collection of Abu Bakr al-Anbari) is a compilation of prophetic traditions transmitted by the traditionist Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Haytham al-Anbari, known as al-Bundar (d. 360 AH / 971 CE), gathered from his transmissions from earlier scholars .

Author and Compilation

The author, Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn al-Haytham ibn Imran al-Bundar (also known as Ibn Abi Ahmad al-Bundar), was of Anbari origin . He was born in Shawwal 267 AH according to his own statement, though another report gives his birth year as 268 AH . He died suddenly in Baghdad on the Day of Ashura in Muharram 360 AH .

Abu Bakr al-Bundar transmitted hadith from a number of prominent authorities, including Ja'far ibn Muhammad al-Sa'igh, Ahmad ibn al-Khalil al-Burjalani, Muhammad ibn Abi al-Awwam al-Riyahi, Abu Isma'il al-Tirmidhi, and Ibrahim ibn Ishaq al-Harbi . His collection was curated through a selection (intiqa') made for him by the scholar Umar al-Basri from original manuscripts preserved in his father's handwriting . When asked about his reliability, Abu Bakr al-Barqani confirmed that no criticism had been leveled against him and affirmed the authenticity of his transmissions .

Transmission and Structure

The complete transmission was originally divided into two large parts (juz'an), alongside a smaller abridged selection (juz' saghir muntaqa) extracted from them .

The work reached later generations through multiple transmission routes (riwayah):

  • The primary line through the hadith master Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Barqani, transmitted via Abu Ghalib Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Baqillani to Abu al-Husayn Abd al-Haqq ibn Abd al-Khaliq ibn Yusuf, who taught it in the congregational mosque in Baghdad . Another branch from al-Baqillani passed through Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ja'far ibn al-Mutawakkil to Abu al-Manja Abd Allah ibn Umar ibn al-Latti .
  • A parallel line transmitted by Bushra ibn Abd Allah al-Fatini directly from al-Bundar, which was passed to Abu Abd Allah Hibat Allah ibn Ahmad al-Mawsili and subsequently to Abd al-Haqq ibn Abd al-Khaliq in Damascus .

Content

The work compiles prophetic traditions and historical reports accompanied by full chains of transmission (asānīd). Its contents encompass a variety of legal, theological, and historical topics, including:

  • Legal rulings on prayer, congregational attendance on Fridays, the ritual purification of tanned animal skins, the rights of women regarding marriage consent, and commercial transactions such as the sale of fresh dates on the tree (al-'arāyā) .
  • Doctrinal and eschatological traditions, including the primordial covenant taken from the progeny of Adam, reports on the Ascension (al-Mi'rāj), the formula for invoking blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, and predestination .
  • Historical narratives, such as reports regarding the rebuilding of the Kaaba during the Prophet's youth and the martyrdom of al-Husayn ibn Ali .
