Hadith Abi al-Husayn ibn al-Muzaffar (حديث أبي الحسين بن المظفر) is a collection of Prophetic traditions transmitted and compiled by the Iraqi traditionist and hadith master Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Muzaffar (286–379 AH / 899–989 CE) .

Background and Author

The compiler, Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Muzaffar ibn Musa ibn 'Isa al-Bazzaz al-Baghdadi, was born in Baghdad in Muharram 286 AH and began hearing hadith around 300 AH . Regarded as one of the prominent traditionists of Iraq, his narrations were recorded by contemporary scholars such as al-Daraqutni, who praised his reliability and wrote thousands of hadiths from him . Ibn al-Muzaffar died in Baghdad in Jumada al-Ula 379 AH at over ninety years of age .

Structure, Content, and Transmission

The collection was circulated in several parts (ajza') and selections (muntaqayat) compiled from Ibn al-Muzaffar's transmissions from his teachers :

  • The Second Part (al-Juz' al-Thani): Recorded in later transmission registers, this part opens with a narration of Imran ibn Husayn mentioning who was most beloved to the Prophet ﷺ, and concludes with the phrase فتختلف قلوبكم ("lest your hearts differ") . It was transmitted from Ibn al-Muzaffar by his student al-Hasan ibn Ali al-Jawhari (Abu Muhammad al-Jawhari), and subsequently passed down through Abu Talib ibn Yusuf and Yahya ibn As'ad ibn Bush to later Syrian traditionists including Fatima bint Muhammad ibn Abd al-Hadi and Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani .
  • Selection for Ibn Hizaba: A specialized part was selected from Ibn al-Muzaffar's transmissions for Abu al-Fadl ibn Hizaba (intaqahu li-Abi al-Fadl ibn Hizaba) . It was transmitted through chains involving Abu Tammam Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Abu Ghalib Ali ibn Abd al-Karim al-Wasiti .
  • Other Selections and Segments: Portions survived through selections made from broader numbered sections, such as a selection from the seventh part (Muntaqa min al-Sabi'), as well as dedicated compilations of his narrations from specific authorities, including Hajib ibn Arkin al-Farghani .
