Hadith Abi al-Fadl al-Zuhri (The Hadith Transmissions of Abu al-Fadl al-Zuhri) is a collection of prophetic narrations transmitted by the Baghdadi hadith scholar Abu al-Fadl al-Zuhri (290–381 AH / 903–991 CE) .

Author and Lineage

The author was Abu al-Fadl 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd Allah ibn Sa'd ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa'd ibn Ibrahim ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf al-Zuhri al-Qurashi . He was born in Jumada al-Akhira 290 AH . He hailed from a scholarly family descending from the companion Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, in which each generation of his paternal lineage back to the companion was recognized as transmitters of hadith .

Al-Zuhri died on Thursday, 25 Rabi' al-Awwal 381 AH, according to reports by al-Muhassin ibn Ali al-Tanukhi and Ibn al-Thallaj; other authorities, including Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Atiqi and Muhammad ibn Abi al-Fawaris, placed his death on 25 Rabi' al-Akhir 381 AH . He was widely praised by contemporaries and later traditionists; al-Daraqutni described him as a trustworthy and truthful scholar and possessor of books ( «ثقة صدوق، صاحب كتاب» ), and he was deemed reliable by al-Barqani and Abu al-Qasim al-Azhari .

Content and Transmission

The collection preserves the narrations that Abu al-Fadl transmitted directly from prominent fourth-century AH traditionists. Among the prominent teachers through whom he relates hadiths in the work are:

  • Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi ('Abd Allah ibn Muhammad), who relates from teachers such as Ali ibn al-Ja'd, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah, Shuja' ibn Makhlad, and Kamil ibn Talhah .
  • Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Harun ibn al-Mujaddar, who relates frequently from Abu Mus'ab al-Zuhri from Imam Malik ibn Anas .
  • His father, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad al-Zuhri, as well as Ibrahim ibn Sharik, Jafar ibn Muhammad al-Firyabi, and Yahya ibn Sa'id .

The texts in the collection span various branches of Islamic learning, including legal judgments, ritual rulings, fasting, virtues, and Quranic exegesis .

The work was transmitted from Abu al-Fadl al-Zuhri by pupils including 'Umar ibn al-Husayn al-Khaffaf, Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Atiqi, al-Barqani, al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Khallal, and Abu Ja'far ibn al-Muslimah . Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani recorded his chain of transmission for the work (as Juz' min Hadith Abi al-Fadl al-Zuhri) through Sitt al-'Arab bint Muhammad, Ali ibn al-Bukhari, Ibn Tabarzadh, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Baqi, and 'Umar ibn al-Husayn al-Khaffaf back to Abu al-Fadl al-Zuhri .
