Hadith Abi Abd Allah al-Ansari (Juzʾ min Hadith Abi Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Zayd ibn Ali ibn Marwan al-Ansari) is a hadith tract compiled from the narrations of the hadith transmitter Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Zayd al-Ansari (d. 377 AH / 987 CE) .
Author and Context
The collection transmits narrations from Abu Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Zayd ibn Ali ibn Jaʿfar ibn Muhammad ibn Marwan ibn Rashid al-Abzari, an affiliated client (mawla) of Muʿawiya ibn Ishaq al-Ansari . Born and raised in Baghdad, he later settled in Kufa and became associated with it . When he visited Baghdad in 376 AH, the prominent hadith master al-Daraqutni made an expert selection (intikhab / intiqāʾ) from his repertoire . Ibn Marwan was considered trustworthy (thiqa) and noble by contemporary scholars, including Abu Bakr al-Barqani and Abu al-Qasim al-Azhari, before dying in Kufa in Safar 377 AH .
Transmission and Contents
The surviving transmission of the work was preserved through a chain connecting later traditionists to the compiler:
- Narrated from Muhammad ibn Zayd al-Ansari by Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi al-Husayn ibn al-Sabbagh al-Qurashi in 433 AH .
- Transmitted from Ibn al-Sabbagh by Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Qinnin al-Abdi in Rajab 498 AH .
- Heard and transmitted from Ibn Qinnin by the حافظ Abu Tahir al-Silafi al-Isbahani in early Muharram 571 AH .
The tract contains prophetic traditions, Companions' reports, and biographical anecdotes transmitted with full chains of transmission (isnad). Among the authorities through whom Ibn Marwan conveys reports are Jubarah ibn al-Mughallis, Hannad ibn al-Sari, Muhammad ibn Yazid al-Rifaʿi, and Ismail ibn Musa al-Fazari . The contents include traditions on moral warnings, eschatology, cupping (hijamah), the merits of Abu Bakr and Umar ibn al-Khattab, prayers for Paradise, and wise sayings attributed to early Muslim figures .
