Hadith Abbas al-Taraqfi (Arabic: حديث عباس الترقفي), also widely known as Juz al-Tarqafi (جزء الترقفي), is a hadith compilation (juz') comprising narrations transmitted by the hadith scholar Abbas al-Tarqafi (d. 267 AH / 880–881 CE) .

Author and Transmission

The collection represents the transmissions of Abu Muhammad Abbas ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi Isa al-Bakusa'i al-Tarqafi, an itinerant hadith scholar who was based in Baghdad and died in late 267 AH in his eighties . Al-Tarqafi was deemed trustworthy (thiqa) and pious by al-Khatib al-Baghdadi and al-Daraqutni, and Shams al-Din al-Dhahabi noted that he possessed a well-known juz' . The text is also cited in historical bibliographies under the title Juz' fihi Amali Abbas ibn Abd Allah al-Tarqafi ("Tract Containing the Dictations of Abbas ibn Abd Allah al-Tarqafi") .

The primary line of transmission for the work traces through al-Tarqafi's student Ismail ibn Muhammad al-Saffar, who narrated it directly from him . Later hadith scholars maintained unbroken transmission chains (asanid) for the tract down to subsequent centuries; al-Suyuti documented receiving the tract through an auditory chain descending from Ismail al-Saffar via Abd Allah ibn Yahya al-Sukkari and al-Husayn ibn Ali al-Bushri .

Content and Scope

The collection gathers individual Prophetic reports and traditions that al-Tarqafi heard and transmitted during his journeys for hadith study . Its chains of narration connect al-Tarqafi to prominent authorities from whom he heard hadith, including Marwan ibn Muhammad al-Tatari, Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Firyabi, Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Muqri, and Rawwad ibn al-Jarrah .

Modern Publication

The tract was edited by Ayman Jasim al-Duri under the title Juz al-Tarqafi and published in a single volume by Maktabat al-Sahaba in Sharjah (1st edition, 1430 AH / 2009 CE) .
