Ghayat al-Sul ila Ilm al-Usul ("The Ultimate Quest in the Science of Legal Theory") is a treatise on legal theory (usul al-fiqh) according to the Hanbali school of law, authored by Ibn al-Mubarrad (d. 909 AH / 1503 CE) .
Sources and Composition
Ibn al-Mubarrad composed the work as a concise handbook summarizing earlier Hanbali treatises on legal theory . In his commentary on the text, the author stated that he abridged it from several works of Hanbali jurisprudence, relying primarily on the legal theoretical works of Ibn Muflih and Ibn al-Lahham .
Bibliographers note slight variations regarding its cataloging: Muhammad Salah al-Khaymi documented a listing in the al-Zahiriyya library index as Ghayat al-Sul wa-Tuhfat al-Wusul, whereas Khayr al-Din al-Zirikli listed them as two separate works by the author: Ghayat al-Sul ila Ilm al-Usul and Tuhfat al-Wusul ila Ilm al-Usul .
Commentary, Manuscripts, and Editions
Ibn al-Mubarrad authored a self-commentary on the work titled Sharh Ghayat al-Sul (also associated with the title Ghayat al-Nuha) .
Manuscripts of the text are preserved in several collections, including the Berlin State Library under manuscript number 4418 and the al-Zahiriyya Library . The text was edited as an academic master's thesis at the Islamic University of Madinah by Dayfallah ibn Salih al-Umari . It was subsequently published in Kuwait, edited by Badr ibn Nasir ibn Mashra' al-Subay'i (Ghiras, 1433 AH / 2012 CE) . The author's commentary, Sharh Ghayat al-Sul, was edited by Ahmad al-Anazi and published in Beirut (Dar al-Basha'ir al-Islamiyyah, 1421 AH / 2000 CE) .
