Ghayat al-Amani fi Tafsir al-Kalam al-Rabbani (The Ultimate of Desires in the Exegesis of the Lord's Discourse) is a comprehensive commentary on the Quran by the Ottoman scholar and judge Ahmad ibn Isma'il al-Kurani (d. 893 AH / 1488 CE) .

Composition and Overview

Al-Kurani completed the work on 3 Rajab 867 AH (1463 CE) . The text opens with the praise: «الحمد لله المتوحد بالإعجاز في النظام» ("Praise be to God, unique in the inimitability of structure") . In some biographical and bibliographical entries, the book is also titled Ghayat al-Amani fi Tafsir al-Sab' al-Mathani or referred to simply as Ghayat al-Amani .

Method and Sources

The commentary is distinguished by its critical engagement with established classical exegetical literature. As recorded by bibliographers such as Hajji Khalifa and Tashkuprizadah, al-Kurani incorporated numerous critical objections and rejoinders (mu'akhidhat kathirah) against the views of al-Zamakhshari and al-Baydawi .

In his analysis of verses, al-Kurani combines grammatical, semantic, and rhetorical evaluations with theological and legal deductions . He discusses variant readings (qira'at), adduces classical Arabic poetry as linguistic evidence, cites transmitted prophetic traditions from authoritative collections such as Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, and scrutinizes theological interpretations regarding prophethood and divine attributes .

Manuscripts and Modern Editions

Manuscript copies of the commentary survive in several libraries, including a historical portion preserved in Sofia consisting of 151 folios . The text has also been the subject of contemporary academic study and editing; an edition covering from Surah al-Najm to the end of Surah al-Nas was prepared as a doctoral dissertation by Mehmet Mustafa Göksu and published through Sakarya University in Turkey in 1428 AH / 2007 CE .
