Gharaib Malik ibn Anas (غرائب مالك بن أنس, "The Rare and Anomalous Hadiths of Malik ibn Anas"), also referred to as Gharaib Hadith Malik ibn Anas, is a specialized hadith compilation by the Baghdadi hafiz Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn al-Muzaffar al-Bazzaz (286–379 AH / 899–989 CE) focusing on rare transmissions, isolated narrations, and chain variants associated with Imam Malik ibn Anas (93–179 AH / 712–795 CE) .

Subject and Scope

The work belongs to the ghara'ib and ilal (hadith defects and variant paths) genre . In it, Ibn al-Muzaffar collected narrations attributed to Malik ibn Anas that deviated from his standard, widespread transmissions or differed in their chains of transmission (asand), such as:

  • Narrations reported through non-standard transmitters or atypical paths from Malik .
  • Transmissions exhibiting variations between raised (marfu') and stopped (mawquf) attributions, including reports narrated mawquf in al-Muwatta' but reported marfu' through outside paths .
  • Reports where certain transmitters connected (mawsul) chains that Malik typically transmitted in an interrupted or expedited (mursal) manner, such as specific reports from Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri .

Reception and Citations

The compilation served as a source for subsequent hadith scholars evaluating individual narrators and anomalous transmissions traced to Malik. It was cited and utilized by later authorities and commentators, including Ibn Abd al-Barr in al-Tamhid, Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, and modern hadith critical studies .

Preservation

Manuscript copies and microfilm records of the work have been documented in several manuscript repositories, including the Central Library of the Islamic University of Madinah and the Central Library in Mecca .
