Fusūl fī al-Da‘wah wa-al-Iṣlāḥ (Chapters on Islamic Propagation and Reform) is a collection of essays, speeches, and radio broadcasts by the Syrian scholar and writer Ali al-Tantawi (1327–1420 AH / 1909–1999 CE), focusing on religious guidance and social reform .
Compilation and Publication
The material was collected, edited, and arranged posthumously by al-Tantawi's grandson, Mujahid Ma’mun Dayraniyyah . It was first published in 2008 by Dar al-Manarah in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as the seventh posthumously issued collection of al-Tantawi's uncollected writings . It forms the second installment in a three-part thematic distribution of al-Tantawi's Islamic writings prepared by the editor, positioned between Nūr wa-Hidāyah and Mabāḥith Islāmiyyah .
The contents span more than fifty years of al-Tantawi's public activity, drawing on newspaper and magazine articles, pulpit sermons, and radio talks produced between 1936 and 1990, in addition to several pieces that had remained unpublished in manuscript form during his lifetime . In compiling the text, the editor reviewed overlapping and repetitive drafts across al-Tantawi's papers, retaining the stronger version of parallel pieces while preserving minor textual variations when deemed appropriate .
Themes and Contents
The book gathers al-Tantawi's output in the fields of Islamic propagation (da‘wah) and reform (iṣlāḥ) across multiple spheres of life:
- Theology and Worship: Defending orthodox Islamic doctrine, combating superstition, esoteric movements, and unauthorized religious innovations (bida‘), and presenting religious tenets in clear, accessible terms .
- Social and Ethical Reform: Addressing contemporary moral corruption, laxity, dishonesty, and hypocrisy; defending personal modesty and virtue; and discussing family life and marital relations .
- Methodology of Propagation: Emphasizing the priority of fundamental creedal principles and agreed-upon Islamic duties over secondary jurisprudential differences and non-essential matters when guiding youth .
- Language and Culture: Defending the standard Arabic language against modern literary decline and championing classical prose and poetry as vehicles for educational and cultural revitalization .
