Fiqh al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah ma'a Mujaz li-Tarikh al-Khilafah al-Rashidah (The Jurisprudence of the Prophetic Biography with a Summary of the History of the Rightly-Guided Caliphate) is an analytical study of the life of the Prophet Muhammad and the early caliphate by the Syrian scholar Muhammad Said Ramadan al-Buti (d. 1434 AH / 2013 CE) .

Background and Purpose

The work originated as a series of university lectures delivered by al-Buti to first- and second-year students at the Faculty of Sharia at Damascus University . Beyond a standard chronological narration of historical events, al-Buti sought to extract legal rulings (ahkam fiqhiyyah), legislative principles, educational morals, and theological reflections from each biographical episode . In the preface to later editions, he articulated his aim to counter contemporary deviations and modern secular methodologies—especially those operating under the banner of "contemporary reading" (qira'ah mu'asirah)—by reaffirming traditional Islamic historiographical and legal frameworks .

Structure and Method

Al-Buti structured the work by first narrating each historical event and then following it with a dedicated analytical section detailing the lessons, rulings, and principles derived from it . In compiling the historical narrative, he stated that he relied primarily on authentic hadith collections and secondarily on early biographical works, foremost among them the Sirah of Ibn Hisham and the Tabaqat of Ibn Sa'd .

The book is organized into several key parts:

  • Introductory Studies (Muqaddimat): Explores the significance of studying the Sirah for understanding Islam, the history and evolution of Sirah compilation, scientific methodology in reporting historical narratives, modern historiographical approaches, the rationale for Arabia being the cradle of Islam, Muhammad's role as the seal of the prophets, and traces of Abrahamic monotheism (hanifiyyah) in pre-Islamic Arabia .
  • The Prophetic Biography: Systematically traces the Prophet's lineage, birth, upbringing, the Makkan period of persecution and preaching, the Hijrah, and the Madinan period with its legislative milestones and military expeditions, concluding with his final illness and death . It includes a concluding discussion addressing the virtues of visiting the Prophet's mosque and grave, alongside a critique of Ibn Taymiyyah's stance on travel specifically undertaken to visit graves .
  • Summary of the Rightly-Guided Caliphate (Khulasah 'an al-Khilafah al-Rashidah): Surveys the succession, major policies, conquests, and internal challenges during the rules of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Umar ibn al-Khattab, Uthman ibn Affan, and Ali ibn Abi Talib, deducing constitutional and jurisprudential principles regarding consultation (shura) and governance .

The book concludes with a specialized index of legal topics (Fihris al-Mawdu'at al-Fiqhiyyah) alongside a general table of contents .

Reception and Critique

The work achieved wide circulation across the Islamic world, going through dozens of editions with publishers such as Dar al-Fikr in Damascus, and was translated into French .

The book also drew critical responses from other scholars. The hadith scholar Muhammad Nasir al-Din al-Albani authored a detailed critique titled Difa' 'an al-Hadith al-Nabawi wa-l-Sirah (A Defense of Prophetic Hadith and the Biography), serialized in the journal Majallat al-Tamaddun al-Islami and later printed independently . Al-Albani argued that despite al-Buti's stated commitment to relying solely on authenticated transmissions, he cited and deduced rulings from weak or uncorroborated reports, such as the narration of Bilal returning to Medina after a dream and the popular phrase attributed to the Conquest of Mecca, اذهبوا فأنتم الطلقاء ("Go, for you are the free ones") . Other reviewers in journals such as Majallat al-Bayan criticized certain theological tendencies and positions regarding the companions' early legal reasoning .
