Fiqh al-Ibadat ala al-Madhhab al-Shafii

Fiqh al-Ibadat ala al-Madhhab al-Shafii (Jurisprudence of Acts of Worship According to the Shafi'i School) is a contemporary manual of Shafi'i jurisprudence by the Syrian scholar Duriyya al-Ayta (d. 1437 AH / 2015–2016 CE), dedicated to practical rulings on Islamic worship with textual proofs from the Quran and Sunnah .

Composition and Purpose

Duriyya al-Ayta compiled the initial material for the work from the lessons she received from her teacher, Shaykh Abd al-Karim al-Rifa'i, supplementing it with reference to several authoritative Shafi'i legal manuals . The book was conceived as a simplified, practical manual for students and general readers seeking essential guidance on the correct performance of daily acts of worship, deliberately avoiding rarely occurring legal scenarios and overly detailed secondary branches (furu') that might overburden non-specialists . Prior to its publication, the author submitted the entire text to Shaykh Muhyi al-Din al-Kurdi, who reviewed its legal rulings and added annotations .

Method and Structure

The work is organized systematically using pedagogical formatting, numbering, and clear topical divisions to facilitate memorization and daily application while avoiding digressions . Most legal rulings are paired directly with evidence from the Quran and the Sunnah, drawn from major hadith compendia ranging from the Sahihs of al-Bukhari and Muslim to the collections of al-Daraqutni and al-Bayhaqi .

Editions and Revisions

After earlier editions were exhausted without modification, the author published a thoroughly revised fifth edition dated 26 Ramadan 1409 AH (1 May 1989 CE) . This edition introduced significant enhancements:

  • Legal adjustments: Rare hypothetical issues were further streamlined, and rulings characterized by prohibitive dislike (karahat al-tahrim) were adjusted to either simple dislike (karaha) or outright prohibition (hurma), aligning strictly with the foundational positions of Imam al-Shafi'i rather than distinctions introduced by later jurists .
  • Reference documentation: Hadith citations were standardized by recording the volume, book name, chapter number, and hadith number where available, or by volume and page number .
  • Linguistic and lexical glosses: Obscure terminology and vocalization were refined through specialized dictionaries, hadith commentaries, and Ibn al-Athir's al-Nihayah fi Gharib al-Hadith .
