Fayd al-Jalil ala Matn al-Dalil (The Abundance of the Majestic upon the Text of the Dalil) is a contemporary Hanbali legal commentary and supercommentary written by the Saudi scholar Ahmad ibn Nasir al-Qu'aymi on the foundational manual Dalil al-Talib li-Nayl al-Matalib by Mar'i ibn Yusuf al-Karmi (d. 1033 AH).

Background and Composition

Al-Qu'aymi authored the work after having taught and explained Dalil al-Talib on multiple occasions, compiling marginal glosses that combined textual explanation, qualifying general statements, deducing secondary branches (tafri'), and citing textual evidences (istidlal). He structured the work similarly to his earlier gloss, al-Hawashi al-Sabighat ala Akhasr al-Mukhtasarat, but expanded it considerably with legal issues and critical verifications (tahrirat) that were absent in Akhasr al-Mukhtasarat due to the larger scope of Dalil al-Talib.

Several scholars and students assisted in the preparation and review of the book: Shaykh Hamza ibn Mustafa Ya'qub (resident of Medina), Shaykh Abd al-Karim ibn Safir al-Quthami al-Utaybi (originally from Ta'if and resident of Medina), who reviewed the entire gloss and offered corrections, and Shaykh Khalil ibn Ali ibn Muhammad.

Content and Methodology

The work functions as an extensive gloss resembling a full commentary (hashiyah ashbah bi-l-sharh), designed to serve both beginning and advanced students of Hanbali jurisprudence. Its methodology adheres to the well-known, relied-upon positions (al-madhhab al-mashhur) within the Hanbali school, with occasional references to alternative narrations (riwayah) or secondary opinions.

Al-Qu'aymi established specific technical terms in his introduction to guide the reader:

  • Mukhalafat al-matin ("the author's divergence"): indicates instances where Mar'i al-Karmi diverged in wording or rulings from either of the school's two principal reference works, al-Iqna' and Muntaha al-Iradat.
  • Mukhalafah ("divergence"): notes differences identified by the commentator between al-Iqna' and al-Muntaha.
  • Khilaf al-muta'akhkhirin ("disagreement of later authorities"): marks disagreements between post-classical Hanbali jurists who followed the two main works, such as Mansur al-Bahuti and Mar'i al-Karmi.
  • Farq fiqhi ("legal distinction"): highlights cases that appear similar in circumstance but carry different legal rulings.
  • Fal-yuharrar ("let it be scrutinized"): indicates matters where the commentator remained hesitant and did not arrive at a definitive conclusion.
