Fawa'id Muntaqat min Kitab al-Kanz al-Madfun (Selected Benefits from the Book al-Kanz al-Madfun) is a philological treatise by the Yemeni scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Muallimi al-Yamani (d. 1386 AH / 1966 CE), containing extracted linguistic and lexicographical notes .
Source and Scope
The work is an extraction of linguistic material from al-Kanz al-madfun wa-al-fulk al-mashhun (The Buried Treasure and the Laden Ark), a broad literary miscellany and compendium of lectures and conversational lore . Although the source text was printed in Bulaq in 1288 AH under an attribution to Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti, scholarly analysis identifies its actual compiler as Yunus al-Maliki Sharaf al-Din (d. 750 AH), a student of al-Dhahabi . Al-Muallimi gathered the bulk of the original work's philological observations, which address topics in Arabic lexicology (fiqh al-lughah) .
Content and Method
The notes in the treatise focus primarily on specific linguistic categories and lexical distinctions, including:
- Synonyms (mutaradifat) and antonyms (addad) .
- Words with threefold vowel variations (muthallathat) and terms possessing two or more dialectal forms .
- Words with or without the glottal stop (hamzah) .
- Distinctions in meaning arising from vocalization differences, such as forms with kasrah versus fathah, or dammah versus fathah .
- Specialized vocabulary, such as specific Arabic designations for the offspring of various animals and terms for natural and celestial phenomena .
In compiling these points, al-Muallimi did not follow the organization of the original source text . He also introduced his own supplementary material not found in the original, such as additional names for wine and versified lines classifying the categories and names of rhetorical paronomasia (jinas) .
Manuscript and Publication
The treatise survives in an autograph manuscript penned by al-Muallimi, preserved among a collection of miscellaneous short treatises and articles under manuscript number 4708 . It was published as the tenth treatise in the section of linguistic and literary writings within the multi-volume collected works series Athar Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Muallimi al-Yamani .
