Fawaid min Sharh Kitab al-Tawhid (Benefits from the Commentary on the Book of Monotheism) is a scholarly compilation prepared by Abd al-Aziz al-Sadhan, gathering doctrinal and analytical points extracted from the lessons of Abd Allah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Jibreen on Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab's Kitab al-Tawhid.
Origin and Composition
The material originates from a series of lessons delivered by Ibn Jibreen at the Ibn Barghash Mosque in the Shubra district of Riyadh. The commentary commenced on Sunday, 2 Sha'ban 1412 AH, and concluded on Sunday, 8 Dhu al-Qi'dah 1412 AH. Although Ibn Jibreen had previously initiated explanations of Kitab al-Tawhid multiple times, this series marked the only occasion where he taught the entire work to completion.
During these lessons, Ibn Jibreen relied on the edition of Kitab al-Tawhid containing the commentary (hashiyah) of Abd al-Rahman ibn Muhammad ibn Qasim. Al-Sadhan recorded the benefits directly from his teacher's classes, noting that much of Ibn Jibreen's scholarship remained confined to audio recordings and student notebooks. The manuscript text was transcribed and collated with the assistance of Sa'd al-'Adwani. Al-Sadhan envisioned the work as the first installment in a planned series of extracted benefits from Ibn Jibreen's lessons, to be followed by works on al-Shatibi's al-I'tisam and Ibn Duwayyan's Manar al-Sabil.
Structure and Methodology
The work presents Ibn Jibreen's commentary through numbered points arranged sequentially according to the chapters of Kitab al-Tawhid. The compiler instituted specific typographical and organizational conventions throughout the text:
- Each extracted benefit is marked with an upper sequential number.
- A lower number indicates the corresponding page of the source text in Ibn Qasim's Hashiyah on Kitab al-Tawhid.
- Direct excerpts from Kitab al-Tawhid are placed within brackets.
- The formula "the Shaykh said" refers specifically to Ibn Jibreen's oral explanations.
- Citations marked as hashiyah refer to Ibn Qasim's marginalia.
The compilation concludes with a detailed topical index classifying the benefits according to their respective chapters in the original text.
