Fawaid Ibn Shahin (فوائد ابن شاهين, The Hadith Benefits of Ibn Shahin), also known in transmission records as Hadith Ibn Shahin or Juz' min Hadith Ibn Shahin, is a collection of hadiths and anomalous transmissions compiled by the Baghdadi traditionist and preacher Ibn Shahin (297–385 AH / 909–995 CE) .
Genre and Nature
In Islamic traditionist terminology, fawa'id compilations are specialized hadith booklets (ajza') assembled to record unusual narrations (ghara'ib), singular chains (mafarid), and select transmissions received from specific teachers . These compilations encompass both sound (sahih) and weak (da'if) reports, the latter being frequent among rare and isolated transmissions . Fawaid Ibn Shahin preserves texts transmitted by Ibn Shahin with his direct chains of transmission (asānīd) from his shaykhs, including early traditionists such as Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman al-Baghandi .
Transmissions and Reception
The work was preserved and circulated through several distinct transmission lines (riwāyāt):
- The recension of the judge and Sharif Abu al-Husayn Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn Muhammad ibn al-Muhtadi Billah, which was subsequently transmitted by Abu al-Su'ud Ahmad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Mujli, Abu Shuja' 'Isa ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Warraq, and the hadith scholar Shams al-Din Yusuf ibn Khalil al-Dimashqi, eventually being endowed at al-Madrasa al-Diya'iyya on Mount Qasiyun in Damascus .
- The recension of Abu al-Fadl Muhammad ibn 'Umar ibn Yusuf al-Urmawi .
- The recension of al-Mahalli, which records dictated sessions (imla') delivered by Ibn Shahin in Safar 384 AH .
Later scholars, including Abu Tahir al-Silafi, documented and cited Ibn Shahin's fawa'id and hadith tracts in their scholarly compilations .
Manuscripts and Publication
Manuscripts of Ibn Shahin's fawa'id and hadith treatises survive in historical collections, most notably in the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (including MS Zahiriyya 17/3754 and Majmu' 71), with copies also cataloged in Kuwait and Mecca .
The work has been edited and published in modern scholarly editions:
- Edited by Badr ibn 'Abd Allah al-Badr and published within a collected volume of Ibn Shahin's treatises (Majmu' fihi Musannafat Ibn Shahin) by Dar Ibn al-Athir (1415 AH / 1994 CE) .
- Edited by Hisham ibn Muhammad and published by Maktabat Adwa' al-Salaf (1418 AH / 1997 CE) .
