Fawaid Ibn Nasr (فوائد ابن نصر, "The Scholarly Benefits of Ibn Nasr") is a hadith tract compiled by the Damascene traditionist Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Umar ibn Nasr al-Dimashqi (d. 410 AH / 1019 CE), preserving selected narrations and traditions transmitted from his diverse teachers .
Scope and Transmission
The work belongs to the traditional fawaid genre of hadith literature, in which scholars compiled distinctive, high-isnad, or beneficial reports heard directly from their teachers (mashayikh) . The text has been transmitted primarily through the narration of Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Ahmad ibn Sasra from the author .
The narrations in the collection feature chains of transmission originating from authorities in Damascus, Egypt, Mecca, and elsewhere . Among the direct teachers whose narrations Ibn Nasr records are Abu al-Fawaris Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Sindi, who dictated in Cairo at the Jazak Mosque; Abu Ali Abd al-Wahid ibn Ali ibn Abi al-Khasib; Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Mawt; Abu Muhammad Abd al-Rahman ibn Jaysh al-Farghani; Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Razi; Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Sulayman ibn Hadlam; Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad al-Baghdadi ibn al-Maqabiri; Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Qasim ibn Ma'ruf; and Abu al-Qasim Hamza ibn Muhammad al-Kinani .
Content and Method
The collection incorporates prophetic traditions along with legal rulings, ethical reports, and biographical remarks . Prominent reports include narrations tracing through al-Muzani from al-Shafi'i from Malik ibn Anas, transmissions via Abu Ubayd al-Qasim ibn Sallam, and traditions addressing legal topics such as ritual washing, prayer, fasting upon sighting the crescent moon, and contractual emancipation of slaves .
Scholarly Standing and Editions
Biographers identify the author, also known as Ibn Nasr al-Bazzaz al-Shaybani, as a traditionist with multiple transmitted hadith booklets (ajza marwiyya) . In hadith criticism, Ibn Asakir and Abu Muhammad Abd al-Aziz al-Kattani recorded that he faced skepticism concerning whether he had directly met and heard from Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Abi Thabit .
The text was edited by Abu Abd Allah Hamza al-Jaza'iri and published in Medina by Maktabat Dar al-Nasiha in 1428 AH / 2007 CE .
