Fawaid Ibn Jamaa (Fawaʾid Ibn Jamaʿah) is a short hadith compilation (juzʾ) compiled and extracted (takhrīj) by the Shafi'i chief judge and hadith scholar al-Izz Ibn Jamaa (694–767 AH / 1294–1365 CE) . It gathers selected prophetic narrations, elevated transmission chains (asānīd), historical reports, poetry, and scholarly anecdotes received from his teachers .
Scope and Contents
The work is entitled in its manuscript tradition as Juzʾ fīhi ahādīth wa-fawāʾid wa-ghayru dhālik min fawāʾid al-Imām al-Hāfiz ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd Allāh ibn Jamāʿah al-Kinānī . It follows the classical genre of fawāʾid (hadith miscellanies), wherein a muhaddith records select high-standard chains and notable narrations transmitted during study sessions across different cities .
The text opens with the prime primordial hadith (al-ḥadīth al-musalsal bi-l-awwaliyyah), « الرَّاحِمُونَ يَرْحَمُهُمُ الرَّحْمَنُ، ارْحَمُوا مَنْ فِي الأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ » ("The merciful are shown mercy by the Most Merciful; have mercy upon those on earth, and the One in the heavens will have mercy upon you") . Ibn Jama'ah recorded receiving it from Fakhr al-Din Abu 'Amr 'Uthman ibn Muhammad al-Tawzari in Mecca opposite the Kaaba, and from 'Alam al-Din Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn al-Nusayr al-Hanafi in Cairo .
Transmission and Notable Reports
The collection incorporates narrations from a variety of Syrian, Egyptian, and regional transmitters, including Abu Hafs 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Mun'im ibn al-Qawwas, Abu al-Fadl Ahmad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Asakir, Zaynab bint 'Umar ibn Kindi, Abu al-Ma'ali Ahmad ibn Ishaq al-Abarquhi, and Izz al-Din Isma'il ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Farra' .
Among the specific transmissions and reports recorded in the compilation are:
- The prophetic hadith « نِعْمَ الإِدَامُ الْخَلُّ » ("Vinegar is an excellent condiment") transmitted through the chain of Ibn Jumay' al-Ghassani, followed by a report from Sari al-Saqati expressing dread of dying in his home city lest the earth reject him .
- The narration of al-Miswar ibn Makhramah concerning the proposal to marry the daughter of Hisham ibn al-Mughirah to Ali ibn Abi Talib, including the Prophet's statement « فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ بَضْعَةٌ مِنِّي يُرِيبُنِي مَا رَابَهَا، وَيُؤْذِينِي مَا آذَاهَا » ("She is part of me; what unsettles her unsettles me, and what harms her harms me") .
- A narration from Abu al-Darda explaining that an increase in lifespan is realized when God grants a servant righteous offspring whose supplications benefit him in his grave .
- A biographical note transmitted from al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman stating that al-Shafi'i would complete thirty recitations of the Qur'an every month, and sixty during Ramadan, outside of what he recited in formal prayer .
- Multiple transmissions of the mass-transmitted (mutawātir) warning « مَنْ كَذَبَ عَلَيَّ مُتَعَمِّدًا فَلْيَتَبَوَّأْ مَقْعَدَهُ مِنَ النَّارِ » ("Whoever lies against me intentionally, let him take his seat in the Fire"), which Ibn Jama'ah documented through several lines, including an elevated nine-link chain (isnād tusāʿī) through direct hearing (samāʿ) .
- Literary excerpts, advice against lending books, moral verses attributed to Miskin al-Darimi on avoiding the foolish, a wisdom excerpt cited from Wahb ibn Munabbih, and an anecdote where Ibn Hayyawayh corrected Abu Bakr al-Suli's reading of a hadith on fasting six days in Shawwal .
