Fawaid Ibn Duhaym (The Hadith Benefits of Ibn Duhaym) is a classical collection of hadith transmissions and dictations by the Damascene traditionist Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Duhaym (d. 303 AH / 915 CE) . The text also bears the title al-Majlis al-Awwal wa-al-Thani min Amali Ibrahim ibn Duhaym (The First and Second Sessions from the Dictations of Ibrahim ibn Duhaym) .

Author and Title

The author, Abu Ishaq Ibrahim ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Ibrahim ibn Maymun al-Dimashqi, was commonly known as Ibn Duhaym after his father, the Damascene jurist and hadith master Duhaym (Abd al-Rahman ibn Ibrahim, d. 245 AH) . According to Ibn Zabr, he died in al-Muharram 303 AH, while other accounts place his death around 300 AH, and some modern bibliographic records list 352 AH . Al-Dhahabi described him as an acceptable traditionist (محدث مقبول), and he was regarded as trustworthy (ثقة) .

Contents and Transmission

The work belongs to the amali (dictation sessions) and fawaid (hadith benefits) genres, preserving narrated prophetic traditions with their chains of transmission (isnad) recorded from his teachers . Among the authorities from whom he narrated in his transmissions were:

  • Muhammad ibn Ali al-Asqalani
  • Abu Umayr ibn al-Nahhas

A substantial group of scholars transmitted hadith from him, most notably Abu al-Qasim al-Tabarani—who narrated extensively from him across his Mu'jam dictionaries—as well as Ibn Adi, Ibn al-A'rabi, Abu Zur'a and Abu Bakr (the sons of Abu Dujana), Abu al-Tayyib Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abi Zur'a, Abu al-Qasim ibn Abi al-Uqb, Harun ibn Muhammad al-Tahhan, Abu Amr ibn Matar, Jumah ibn al-Qasim, and his nephew Abd al-Rahman ibn Amr ibn Duhaym .
