Fawaid Ibn al-Baghban (Fawāʾid Ibn al-Bāghbān, فوائد ابن الباغبان) is a hadith tract (juzʾ) compiled by the Isfahan-based hadith transmitter Abu al-Khayr al-Baghban (d. 559 AH / 1164 CE) containing selected narrations from his transmissions .

Author and Context

The author was Abu al-Khayr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Umar al-Baghban al-Isbahani (born in the 460s AH), an elderly traditionist and surveyor (muqaddar) from Isfahan . The nisba al-Bāghbān refers to the upkeep of orchards and gardens (bāgh) . He possessed elevated chains of transmission (ʿuluww al-isnād) and was praised by Ibn Nuqtah as a trustworthy traditionist with verified audition (thiqah saḥīḥ al-samāʿ) . Among the principal authorities from whom he received hadith and transmitted in his collections was Abd al-Wahhab ibn Mandah .

Transmission

The surviving text of the Fawaid is documented under the title Juzʾ fīhi Fawāʾid min Ḥadīth Abī al-Khayr Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Muqaddar al-Bāghbān al-Iṣbahānī . It was preserved through the transmission of the female scholar Karima bint Abd al-Wahhab al-Qurashiyya (Umm al-Fadl Karima bint al-Amin Abi Muhammad Abd al-Wahhab ibn Ali al-Qurashiyya), who received it by written authorization (kitābatan) from Abu al-Khayr al-Baghban . The text was subsequently heard directly (samāʿan) from Karima by Ahmad ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi al-Ghana'im (al-Muslim ibn Hammad ibn Mahfuz ibn Maysara al-Azdi), who transcribed the manuscript .

Publication

The work was edited by Muhammad Ziyad Tiklah and published in Riyadh by Maktabat al-Ubaykan (1421 AH / 2001 CE) as part of a collective edition comprising nineteen specialized hadith treatises, titled Jamharat al-Ajzāʾ al-Ḥadīthiyyah .
