Fawa'id fi Kitab al-Ilal li-Ibn Abi Hatim (فوائد في كتاب «العلل» لابن أبي حاتم, "Benefits in the Book of Hidden Defects by Ibn Abi Hatim") is a collection of critical hadith notes by the Yemeni scholar Abd al-Rahman al-Muallimi al-Yamani (d. 1386 AH / 1966 CE), containing technical points and methodological observations drawn from Ibn Abi Hatim's (d. 327 AH / 938 CE) classic work Kitab al-Ilal .

Composition and Scope

The work consists of loose leaves in which al-Muallimi extracted over fifty critical hadith insights as he read through Ibn Abi Hatim's al-Ilal . He did not reorganize the extracted points thematically; rather, he recorded them sequentially as they occurred in the original book, referencing each entry by its hadith number .

In the primary manuscript leaves, al-Muallimi's notes reach up to hadith number 488—covering roughly one-sixth of the 2,840 hadiths in Ibn Abi Hatim's work . In addition to these leaves, al-Muallimi recorded further notes on the cover of the second volume of his personal copy of al-Ilal, housed in the Library of the Grand Mosque of Mecca (Maktabat al-Haram al-Makki), beginning at hadith number 1410; editors appended these marginal notes to the end of the text in their numerical order .

Style and Contents

Al-Muallimi's entries are written in an extremely concise style, functioning as condensed technical prompts and cues intended for specialists in hadith criticism . Many entries consist of only a short phrase, the opening words of a hadith, or a single critical term .

The recorded notes touch upon various technical issues of hadith criticism, such as:

  • Applying weak narrations in supplications .
  • Principles for evaluating conflicting transmission pathways and multiple wordings .
  • Causes of narrators' errors, conflation of distinct chains (idkhal hadith fi hadith), and interpolation (idraj) .
  • Concealment in transmission (tadlis), including evaluations of reports involving Sufyan ibn Uyaynah and Baqiyyah ibn al-Walid .
  • Critical judgments and discussions involving classical critics such as Abu Hatim al-Razi, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, and Yahya ibn Ma'in .

Publication

The text was edited by Muhammad Ajmal al-Islahi and Adil ibn Abd al-Shakur al-Zuraqi and published as the seventh treatise in Volume 15 of Athar al-Shaykh al-Allamah Abd al-Rahman ibn Yahya al-Muallimi al-Yamani, a multi-volume collection of al-Muallimi's scholarly treatises on hadith terminology and transmitter criticism .
