Fawaid al-Iraqiyyin li Abi Said al-Naqqash (The Benefits of the Iraqis) is a specialized hadith compendium compiled by the Isfahan-based traditionist Abu Said al-Naqqash (d. 414 AH / 1023 CE), assembling transmissions and narrations recorded from Iraqi teachers .

Author and Context

The author, Abu Said Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Amr ibn Mahdi al-Isfahani al-Hanbali, was a hadith scholar from Isfahan who traveled extensively in pursuit of transmissions . His travels took him across Iraq, Khurasan, al-Jibal, and the Hijaz, including Baghdad, Basra, Kufa, Merv, Jurjan, Hamadhan, Dinawar, Nihawand, Nishapur, and Mecca and Medina . Drawing upon his studies with Iraqi scholars—among whom were Abu Bakr al-Shafi'i and Abu Ishaq al-Hujaymi—he assembled this focused work of selected Iraqi transmissions (fawa'id) . He died in Ramadan 414 AH at over eighty years of age .

Transmission and Reception

The text was transmitted down through major hadith scholars via chains originating with al-Naqqash's direct students . Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani documented his own chain of transmission for the juz' through Yahya ibn Yusuf Ibn al-Misri from Ali ibn Hibat Allah Ibn al-Jummayzi from Abu Tahir al-Silafi from Ahmad ibn Abd al-Ghaffar ibn Ashta from Abu Said al-Naqqash .

Later traditionists and commentators frequently referenced and cited narrations from Fawaid al-Iraqiyyin, including al-Sakhawi in al-Maqasid al-hasana and Muhammad ibn Isma'il al-San'ani in his commentary al-Tanwir sharh al-Jami' al-saghir .

Manuscripts and Publication

Manuscript copies of the work have survived, including a copy cataloged under collection number 2094-9-F at the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies in Riyadh . The work was edited by Majdi al-Sayyid Ibrahim and published in Cairo by Maktabat al-Quran .
