Fawaid al-Fawaid (The Benefits of Benefits) is a hadith monograph (juz') compiled by the traditionist and jurist Ibn Khuzayma (223–311 AH / 838–924 CE), comprising selected narrations from his auditory transmissions .
Background and Transmission
The collection represents a specialized hadith selection that Ibn Khuzayma extracted from his own audition for scholars and students from Balkh . As noted by the historian Ibn Nasir al-Din al-Dimashqi in Minhaj al-Salama, the work was formally compiled by Ibn Khuzayma from his received transmissions specifically for the Balkhis and became widely known under the title Fawaid al-Fawaid .
The text was preserved and transmitted from Ibn Khuzayma primarily through his grandson, Abu Tahir Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Muhammad ibn Khuzayma . Later transmission chains, documented by Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti in Anshab al-Kuthub fi Ansab al-Kutub and by Salah al-Din al-Ala'i, trace its transmission through figures such as Ahmad ibn Mansur al-Maghribi, Zahir ibn Tahir al-Shahhami, Ibn al-Jawzi, and Yusuf ibn al-Zaki al-Mizzi .
Contents and Citations
The monograph consists of transmitted prophetic traditions accompanied by full chains of narration (isnad). Among the narrations cited from the work by later scholars are:
- The Hadith of Gabriel (hadith Jibril), referenced from this juz' by Ibn Nasir al-Din .
- A narration transmitted on the authority of Bishr ibn Mu'adh, from Abu 'Awanah, from Qatada, from Anas ibn Malik, stating: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ ﷺ وَأَبَا بَكْرٍ وَعُمَرَ وَعُثْمَانَ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ كَانُوا يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ الْقِرَاءَةَ بِالْحَمْدِ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ("The Prophet ﷺ, Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman used to begin their recitation with: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ [Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds]"), as documented by al-Ala'i in Itharat al-Fawaid al-Majmu'a .
Modern Editions and Scholarship
Fawaid al-Fawaid was edited by Tal'at ibn Fu'ad al-Hulwani and published by Dar Majid 'Asiri in Jeddah in 1422 AH / 2001 CE as the first volume in the series Silsilat Ajza' al-Fawa'id al-Hadithiyya .
The narrators appearing in the work were subsequently indexed alongside those of Ibn Khuzayma's al-Sahih and Kitab al-Tawhid by Nayif al-Mansuri in his biographical dictionary al-Masalik al-Qawimah bi-Tarajim Rijal Ibn Khuzayma, where they are designated with the abbreviation Fa' (ف) .
