Fawaid Abi Ali al-Sawwaf (Fawāʾid Abī ʿAlī al-Ṣawwāf, "Scholarly Benefits of Abu Ali al-Sawwaf") is a collection of hadith transmissions from the Baghdadi traditionist Abu Ali al-Sawwaf (d. 359 AH / 970 CE) .

Selection and Transmission

The surviving third part (al-Juzʾ al-Thālith) of the collection represents a selection (intiqāʾ) made from al-Sawwaf's transmissions by the hadith master al-Daraqutni . It was transmitted on al-Sawwaf's authority by Abu Nu'aym al-Isfahani . Downstream chains of transmission recorded in the text include transmissions through Abu Ali al-Hasan ibn Ahmad al-Haddad and Abu Tahir Abd al-Wahid ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Sabbagh, down to the female transmitter Umm Hani Afifa bint Ahmad ibn Abd Allah al-Farfani, who received it by direct audition (samāʿ) from Abu Tahir and by authorization (ijāzah) from Abu Ali al-Haddad . Later traditionists, such as Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, documented receiving transmissions from the second and third parts of al-Sawwaf's hadith collection .

Manuscripts and Publication

The third part of the text survives in a manuscript preserved within the Umariyya collections (al-Majāmīʿ al-ʿUmariyyah) at the Zahiriyya Library in Damascus (compilation no. 105, item 12, folios 156–173) .

The work was edited by Mahmud ibn Muhammad al-Haddad and published by Dar al-Asimah in Riyadh in 1408 AH (1988 CE) . This printed edition is incomplete, containing only 35 hadiths, whereas the original manuscript contains 168 narrations (a lacuna of 133 hadiths occurring after the third report) .
